OBD II Cable
Re: OBD II Cable
It's not recognised as a USB cable because it's a serial one . . . (via the USB-SERIAL converter in the cable)
You need to see what com port it's mapped itself to then configure VAGCOM to use that com port . . .
If you can't do that then you're using the wrong version of VAGCOM . . .

From what I've been reading on the vwaudi forum, the biggest problem with these cables is the com port config. I found this link which is step by step details on setting up the com port, which might be of use http://yassek.com/setcomonusben.html.

Re: OBD II Cable
I missed the obvious there Fergus, the clue in the USB>Serial conversion, I was assuming that the USB port was selected. Checked the Ports in Systems and it was configured to COM1.
Tried test again and it recognised the Com port, but not the Interface. Installed V311, which does not have a USB Port option, but the same result.
When the cable is plugged in, it shows as a High Speed Serial USB in Device Manager/USB Controllers, and dissapears when unplugged. Plus all drivers are shown installed in Windows.
Bottom line is that the software will just not recognise or speak to the cable Interface.

Re: OBD II Cable
Cheers Kev. I have been through the COM Port configuration, but I will give the other a try, ie disabling the USB devices and reinstalling the cable drivers.
Will dig out an old PS/2 mouse as I will have to remove my USB one.

Re: OBD II Cable
Bottom line is that you're using the wrong software version, and previously configuring it for USB when it should have been serial
. You need to read the instructions on the VAGCOM site.
When you have the correct software version installed, with the correct com port configured and the cable plugged into the car with the ignition on but engine not running . . . I suspect it will work just fine . . .

Re: OBD II Cable
Operative point Fergus was PLUGGED into the car.
I would have done that on the assumption that it was not seeing the interface because it was not attached to anything. However I was following the Ross-Tech instructions which say that you carry out the test function before you plug into the car.
This of course applies to their own cable, which will have different built in electronics, and along with their licenced software, will test out from the PC.
Thanks for persevering with the help. Chris has just been round, so I now have the option of using his Version 311 software which is the pukka one and fully functional, as opposed to the partly crippled free download.

Re: OBD II Cable
Heh . . .
I actually managed for a good while on the ebay cable, only my new A6 (Which is CAN based) seems to be more picky . . . (the aircon disabled itself (and you have to have aircon on these cars as the windows steam up otherwise - climate control I think ?) and the aircon/climate ECU was one of the units the ebay cable wouldn't work with - typical - so rather than take it to a 'specialist' I just bought the proper cable, turned out to be a 10 quid pressure sensor (as I suspected - that the whole car seemed to have been assembled around - still got the scars from changing it) . . . so in one go it paid for itself)
I think you've probably have all the different parts working, just not all at the same time
Anyway . . . sorted now . . .
VAGCOM is a brilliant bit of software . . . especially if you tend to run one make of car (we have 2 Audis) . . . and tend to run them for a long time . . .

Re: OBD II Cable
Sorry Tut, only managed to get mine to work tonight. I've been using the works laptops, but couldn't get the cable to work so gave up. But gave it another try tonight and got it to work. Dont know what I was doing wrong the first time, but I've got it working now.tut wrote:Kev
I bought the same one sometime ago for the Audi TT and downloaded the VAG-COM software from Ross-Tech, but did not have any success with the setup/run procedure on the notebook, so could not check it out when plugged into the OBD connector on the car.
Let me know if you get it working, and whether I have missed anything.
