Shoomer, any track day can cause stone chips, if someone has gone off in the gravel and drags it onto the track for example. As long as you don't drive right up close to people then it's not too bad. That said I did crack my windscreen there but again I have cracked it at other tracks and on road too.

I enjoyed it was a good track. :thumbsup

Here's my vid of the day. http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?doc ... 2651880786
Hi - I remember, you were lapping me about every third lap :(

I have bit more power now so it should be at least every fourth lap - are you thinking of going again?

What's the craic with marshalling, paramedic cover etc? or is it purely at your own risk type event?

Crail is pretty high speed so if you lose it on one of the faster corner with someone behind you it could get messy.

I had a nice big spin at a walshy day a few years back :D

Defo no Marshal's last time and pretty sure no Paramedics.

Do you want someone in an ambulance or just some chap around who knows what to do?

May be able to add one more to the list...

(That's 2 disconnected statements. I may be able to come. Guy at work may want to come that's 2.
I may also know a paramadic who may want to come but if he is there as a medic it would be cheeky to charge him. Would it be useful to have there as a pax or do you want some guy sitting in an ambulance?)

Cant do the 8th as the car is undergoing some upgrades, 22nd is doable.

I think the last SE day at Crail was 24th Nov 2004. This was my first ever track day.

I remember thinking that as it was an airfireld it would be nice and safe with lots of run off. It was also very cheap. I recall a couple of the SE dinosaurs saying that they thought that KH was safer due to run offs and gravel etc. Pfff! I thought, what do they know? That was before I went there on my first ever track day (I think I may have already mentioned that :D )

The day started dry and an excellent turn out from SE. It was Lee and Mel who brought it all together. Being right on the coast and November it was absolutely baltic (wrap up well guys).

As well as the track, Willie allowed us to use the small figure of 8 which was cool for me as a newbie to get a feel for the car at a low speed. As the day wore on, the rain started to drizzle before turning to pretty wet. I had a couple of spins at the hairpin, but knew what I had done and no problem, however coming through the fast kink I spun it in the wet big time. A couple of full rotations and I was heading for conveniently placed metal gates. Whilst I was still spinning, I was already counting the cost of front and rear clams. Fortunately I came to rest before making contact and lived to tell the tale.

Yes the surface was a little rough, but probably no more so than most of the roads we drive on. Definitely can't compete with a permanent circuit surface. Yes there was one or two stones, but I don't recall anything big and again no worse than driving on the road.

I can't recall if there were marshalls but there were definately some of Willie's crew there. The circuit is flat and from memory no corners are blind (like KH) so corner marshalls are less important from that POV. I am pretty sure that helmets weren't required as I didn't own one at that time, but I would always recommend that you wear one if you have one for this kind of thing. If nothing else it will keep your head warm!

As can be seen from Rog's and BigD's vids, much of the track is defined by large tyres kinda like a gocart track. That wasn't an issue for me the last time, but could be a bit messy if you get it wrong.

As I am a big wuss and don't do track days without insurance (only covered for owners club TDs) I will not be on track, but will probably be along at some point for some banter.

In summary, you will be getting what you pay for and should be reasonable value. I would still probably suggest that this may not be the track for a complete TD novice although I am sure others will disagree.

thinking out loud, a full equiped ambulance would be nice given the distance from the circuit to the nearest hospital (at least then it's only a one way journey) but then what's the point in having that if there's not a extrication team on hand.....

I'm on record as saying that I won't be going back to Teeside until they have tightened up their safety on track days so would be hypocritical of me to not expect better standards else where. I work in an industry where risk minimisation is the name of the game, I'm not trying to p1ss on anyone's parade.

Thats good information especially since my original idea was to get more people at work out on a track day and they are complete novices. I thought that the run off's would make it safer but having watched the video I can see that its not necessarily the case. Maybe I would be better suggesting the next SIDC day to them.

I still fancy a go at Crail though, assuming we get the numbers.

Just out of interest - how do you get an Ambulance on standbuy? I take it its private, any idea how much it costs?

They would be the folk to ask but that is getting a bit serious. I'd guess a few hundred quid minimum, 2 paramedics (say 300) plus vehicle plus VAT?

Just had a chat with my paramedic mate. He suggests call the local ambulance station, if the area is remote they'll have cars around anyway, if you are lucky they may send a car along to watch (especially if the guy is a car enthusiast) and if not at least they are pre-warned so you discuss ingress egress with them. Likewise the local fire brigade.

Also the remoteness of it isn't a huge issue, that's what the helicopters is for so if something were to happen they'd send that. ALso chance of renting stuff from Scottish Ambulance service or "paramedic 1" a private company that rents out Ambulances and crews.

I suggest get numbers then call the local ambulance mob and see what they say?
