Westfield Megabusa, extremely quick, 6 speed sequential box, the option to upgrade to more power, nothing much will touch one on track, you will pick a very nice one up for £15k which leaves money to upgrade or get something else too

I did a day at Croft a couple of years back and there was a guy with a Megabusa on slicks. There were some very quick cars there including a GT3 and assorted Honda Lotis, but the Busa was mules quicker than any of them. Having owned a Westfield in the past the lack of crash protection would worry me though and they do feel a bit cheap and nasty compared to a Caterham.

Would a Megabusa be any quicker than a R400 ?

After watching the Caterhams on saturday I was amazed at the speeds they can keep through corners, people driving them knew what they were doing as well.

Would you be keeping Special K Mike ?

nice dilemma to have.

Radical/Westfield XTR etc - you need to have a mechanic in tow to run on track days - will be more expensive than a gt3

Atom - i think offers no road practicality at all, weather protection etc and handlingwise flawed due to the rather high mounting of the engine so top heavy weight at the rear - hence andy's oversteer problems which are inherent.. with the atom and andy..

Caterham - R300/400/500 - so cheap to run, great fun on track, very quick on track, surprisingly comfortable on the road and at least can have a roof / luggage / heater etc. i am maybe a little biased (have r400 duratec) but i hated the caterhams before i tried one. actually considered only trailering to trackdays to save the embarrasment of being seen in one on the road, but after realising how much fun they are decided to us on road too.

Prosche GT3 - i have only driven the 997GT3 in anger (at spa and the Ring) and have to say such a solid and well built car, but again fundamentally working against itself in terms of being quite understeery, until front tyres heat up mid corner, grip and slew the car into oversteer! I believe the 996 gt3 is more raw and probably the more entertaining car to drive (and much cheaper). i found the 997gt3 pretty boring, particualarly on the road where you had to be driving far to fast to enjoy and so 99% of the time not enjoying it.
They are however NOT expensive to run.. probably cheaper than a radical. only rear tyres will be your main consumable and you could just have a track set of wheels with slicks or semi slicks that would last for ages.
The GT3 996 is also a pretty safe purchase for residual and depreciation.. if looked after well unlikely to depreciate any further.

M3 CSL - awesome road car, and drift car.. and a cheap alternative to a gt3... but needs bigger brakes, and expensive to service/run (i owned one for a year some years back)

2-11 - i havent driven one yet... maybe scotty will give me a shot of his some time?? but think as it has some aero it will be very planted and therefore very quick but not necessarily that much fun to drive compared to a caterham.

30k would buy you a very nice R400 - there are a few on ph..

Strange - I have always considered them to be pretty cool. The car-illiterate will probably think it is just a silly wee kit car, but you will surely get an approving nod from anyone who knows anything about performance cars.

S1 S/C Honda, matches Mads whether he is in his F360 or R400, just not allowed to overtake him at the Hairpin or Duffus on the inside when I pull alongside him.

The most common question/comment by far is, "is it a Morgan?" Not having any chrome does not put them off the scent either!

Tut - no chance!! on either count. You have to consider when tracking a 360cs (which is supposed to be diffcult to drive on track) which is one of i think 118 uk RHD cars in the world.. and a car i intend to keep for a very long time.. vs. lotus/honda/lhd/shed that i will have to treat my car with a little more care. You would park your car in my engine bay if i used my brakes to full effect into the hairpin, and yes, diving up the inside into the hairpin maybe the only way you could avoid hitting my car!!
Again, we didnt have a fair "race" in the R400vs your lotus, but again if you look at lap times then i would suggest you would be slightly slower round a lap without traffic.. your car is very quick in a straight - i can even recall you out dragging the CS up the straight at KH!! and in know the CS outdrags the R400 up the same straight.

There is an old race saying - to win a race, first you have to finish.

Tis all jocular as you know mads, if I really tried to keep up with you in your R400 for a few laps I would probably throw myself off track.

However I did enjoy lapping with you in the 360 as there was nothing in it, and it was great to see you drive it as if you had stolen it. Fair does to N3, that is the first time that it has broken in over two years, and even then it was my fault not its.
