You could always put a bit of wooden cladding on the sides to make it look a bit more acceptable but I recon £20 worth of brown paint would probably do the job.

I acquired a few hundred reclaimed railway sleepers late last year; some knackered but some still in good strong condition. I have thought about building something out of these, would knock together pretty quick and would be solid. Just the question of planning again.

Another avenue to look down is a pre fab concrete garage. I had one and I couldn't give it away, might be worth checking gumtree and putting a wanted ad up.
I believe as long as the garage is lower then 2.5m high and smaller then 30m2 floor area you don't need planning permission. There are a few other caveats to do with being a certain distance from a road as well. When I was looking into it I just walked into the local planning authority and asked what size I could have and told them my address and they checked the maps to see whether it would be ok.

Depends on garden size and if your facing, backing onto a public aspect and also if the property has been extended in the past.

I've got about 400 of them, but I haven't had time to sort through and grade them yet, some will just be fit for firewood. These are the proper old ones with the tarry preservative, so you have to be careful where you use them.

The idea is to grade them and flog em on Ebay. Could you collect, I live about 20 miles north of Dundee?

A decent architect should be able to advise on / interpret planning regs around this, I would have thought?

Even if you are staying only a year or so, I'd caution against ignoring your neighbours' feelings around this...why create negative vibe?

Ideally, you want to create a presentable temporary structure at minimal cost...if you could do that, in absence of Planning Perm, then it's just possible that there won't be any neighbours' objections and you won't have to tear it down...but if there were, only minimal costs would be sunk. Could you get a 2nd hand timber effort? 2nd hand concrete panel affairs are certainly out there BUT they generally look terrible and I'd be the first to complain if a neighbour put one up in my line of sight!

Depending on how you feel, you could always consult personally with your neighbours up front...you might be pleasantly surprised? However in even of any objection (now or afterwards) you are going to NEED Planning Regs on your side or the game's a bogey.

I joined the local council waiting when I was 14!!!! Priority always goes to existing council tenants, so in reality I'll never get one.

Keep pestering the council - There are usually a few garages to be had in Aberdeen (mostly in outlying areas) ,but i wanted mine near my house.

I checked every few months and to my surprise i checked one February - "You are 31st on the list" to a letter in April offering me a garage where i wanted it !!

Also council garages are £9 a week in Aberdeen

I can do the 10k, but I reckon it would be a better investment to spend it elsewhere in the house. Plan being to convert the box room to an ensuite and renew the kitchen. Personally, I would prefer the big garage but I live alone. And doing everything would push up what I've spent to a level that it I'd struggle to get my money back when I sell.

Rent a council garage. My mate got one in Bridge of Don, Aberdeen (no real waitin) and only cost £18 per week. Nice short term solution.

You have already had the involvement of an architect, ask him to submit an enquiry with an outline proposal , I'd think for a timber garage to suit your requirements.

There is no other way to check this out with any degree of certainty and as he's already done some of the groundwork he probably has a fair handle on the situation. There are guidelines but each case is specific, we would always even when planning is not required ask for formal confirmation, it keeps things straight.
