Reason I'm asking is that I know in racing motorcycle circles that it's quite common to have the peak power (and change up point) several hundred rpm below the rev limit - gives you the option to hang onto the gear till the end of a long corner without having to change up and disturb the balance.

I always use 3rd at the chicane (unless following a very slow car).
