I have a great spreadsheet that calculates;

Speed per 1000rpm
Max speed in each gear
Rev drop on upshift in each gear

Handy tool for comparing different gearboxes and figuring out what's best for the characteristics of your engine.

Like Woody says, the performance advantage afforded by the B4BP box is not sufficient to justify the extra cost involved, IMHO.

I wrote a program the simulates acceleration - it allows you to configure both the engine power (or torque, if you must) curve and the gear ratios, final drive, rolling radius, time-to-shift and coefficient of drag. It then lets you set starting speed and maximum length of straight and works out how long it will take you to run down the straight/what your speed at the braking point will be. I could easily extend it to compute the straight-line contribution to lap time based on a collection of straights from a particular circuit (corner exit speed, length of straight).

I'll dig the program out tonight (if I can find it .. was a few years ago) and make these changes.

Cheers,
Robin

Would love a copy of that Robin and I could compare its calculations to the actual data I log on circuit.

Cheers

April 2007 Robin, to give you an idea for searching.

When I can be bothered I'll knock up a simulation program (sure there are plenty already, but always fun writing another one ;-)) and will plug in our power curves and gear ratios and see what happens ...

Sure thing - it's a Java program but I can probably package it up to work for you. I compared it against o-60 and 0-100 times that were available in magazines and it was correct to within a 1/10th. However, it will be most useful for making comparisons rather than predicting outright laptimes.

What circuits do you have data for? Just one would be enough - if you can give me an idea of the corner exit and length of straight I can set the program up with that data to start with.

Robin

Bolt a web front end on it, Robin, get it hosted (Simon?!) and provide it on a pay-per-click basis ;-)

That's about 1,000 times more complicated than the program is ... I've lost the program so will need to rewrite - not hard, just a bit time consuming ...
