thats what my mate thought as well but cant see where the air would be leaking from. All the pipes are fairly tight.

To clarify things:

The engine idle speed is governed by the IACV. If you pull off ht epipe and stick your thumb over it the engine should die (Take the bigger pipe off and cover the engine end not the TB end) If it doesnt then there is a serious leak somewhere as it's getting air from somewhere.

Check the MAP sensor is attached, the fuel pressure regulator is plumbed in and there is a black bung in a red collar in the top cnetre of hte manifold (if plastic) Check the manifold is tight to the head and there are no obvious leaks.

When you say the throttle is closed is it hitting the stop or is it physically shut? There aren't any holes in the butterfly valve?

You mention a big square hole, are you sure this is blanked off properly?

A pic, the finger(!) is pointing at the IACV pipe you need to block off. On the other side is another vacuum pipe that should be fitted. On the other end is the MAP sensor pipe and the FPR pipe should both be attached and leak free. the Red bung is in the centre and just pushed in.

Idle Air Control Valve. Follow the finger...

It is a motor operated bypass valve notorious for being rubbish and gunging up with greasey mess. Pull the pipe off and stick your thumb over it. If it dies the IACV is bunged up with crap, if it don't then the throttle butterfly is open or you have a leak.

The IACV is held in with mini torx bit screws and then just pulls out. The end should be shiney steel, yours (Like mine!) will be manky as hell.

Right I have a similar problem it would seem, I think that it is because the throttle cable is very long and draggy so the spring isn't quite up to closing the butterfly totally. It looks closed and is on the stop but a slight tap closes it and the revs drop. I have backed off the stop screw a bit more and it seems to have worked but IIRC yours only has a spring on one side.... Might be worth dismantling it all and putting another turn of preload onto the spring so the butterfly snaps shut a bit more positively. This *may* help.

With the IACV shut off and it doesn't die then you have a leak....
