Do you think double points for the final F1 race of the season is a good idea?

Result of possible finishing positions in Abu-Double:

Double points does give Nico more of a chance, and therefore makes the last race more interesting, but no, the rule is a total farce.

I disagree. A world champion is a world champion.

During Brazil, the Sky F1 pundit who wasn't a driver made a comment making it clear that he thought the driver with the most wins should be champion - on the basis that Hamilton has won 10 to Rosberg's 5 - though quite where you'd draw that line would be the issue..

No one looks at 2008 and thinks it's a hollow victory for Hamilton since Glock won it for him, and Massa had won more races.

There are plenty more championships that have been decided by single factors, questionable legality suspension, potentially intentional accidents, interesting diffusers... None are considered all that hollow.

Back on topic though, double points is a terrible idea, but I think that changing rules half way through a season is also a terrible idea. Part of me is glad that they've stuck with it rather than making yet another farcical decision to remove it.

While it may appear something of a backwards step, stranger things have happened - And if they did go this route, Mercedes would very likely withdraw their entry ASAP...
This is going to be a balancing act between cost and relevance again... No question the V8s are cheaper to build and buy (esp for the customer teams like Caterham et al) and sound better, but have little relevance in progressing real world cars. Of course cost is relative to gains and all the engine builders will see benefits in F1 technology in their road car programmes, but this is irrelevant for the teams who actually have to purchase F1 engines.

It would be a far more interesting sport if they removed the restrictions on innovation.... Give the teams 100 litres of fuel per race & it's up to them to find the fastest way round.
Arriving broadside, in a cloud of smoke......

We have that. It's called LMP1, and you are spot on... it is a FAR more interesting sport than F1. :thumbsup

EDIT:
OK, not everyone watches WEC, but here's why you absolutely should:

LMP1 Hybrid cars get a fixed amount of energy to use per lap, and some rules about how recovery/redeployment, but the variety of solutions is brilliant.

Audi have a 3.7L V6 TDi with recovered energy stored in a carbon flywheel, plus Quattro traction out of the corners.
Toyota have a 3.4 V8 with recovered energy stored in a supercapacitor.
Porsche have a 2.0 turbo charging a hefty battery, RWD and epic power up the straights.

In the non-hybrids, Rebellion have the Toyota 3.4L V8, and they can be thought of as the benchmark for the above without the hybrid systems.

So many great drivers in the field, e.g. Buemi didn't make the F1 career stick, but you should see him in LMP1... He can pedal!

And if LMP1 doesn't grab you, you can watch LMP2, GT-Pro and GT-Am races instead. On the same track. At the same time. Brilliant! :D

Saturday, 11:30am, Motors TV, 6hrs of Bahrain. High track temps, air temps, cabin temps, a dusty track.... and enough points left that Toyota or Audi can both still win the championship. :D

The fuel thing is a brilliant idea, let them use as much hybrid tech as they like when they like.

I do think everyone should be on a reasonably level playfield. I feel all the side deals like Ferrari getting more money because they are "special" does more harm than manufacturers spanking mega money

There was already a two (or maybe even 3) tier grid, why not run with that aim- big teams unlimited budget, innovative technology with the aim of pushing the boundary, along with smaller teams, capped budget shared technology. Run 2 separate qualifying sessions to prevent them complaining of being held up and to give an additional focus for fans but one race as they do now.

You could even introduce double points for tier 2 teams ;)
