It's another of these personal preference things. I'm going to go and have a look around soon to see what I like but I'm sure when I've looked before I preferred plasma to LCD. There's no way I'll be buying online without having seen the TV for real first.

Scotty, cheers for the link. Once I've had a look around I'll check the site out and see if there's anything there I've spotted.

Some of the "HD" demos I gave seen have been utterly shameful. Accept no substitute.

Why is it that manufacturers insist on putting pikey speakers on screens costing >700 when they know the majority will be hooked up to a 5.1/7.1 ?

They could put a tiny bezel on it and and all of a sudden 42 might not look so big in your gaff.

Do not get me started on naff stands ... (apologiesif I have offenced totally personal taste)

Ive got a 37" Toshiba LCD with twin HDMI.
2x HDMI was essential for me... as my DVD has HDMI, and i'm gonna get Sky HD sometime soon... when it comes down in price that is.
I also use it as a pooter monitor.. love being able to sit on the sofa and browse the web.

I would say colours on Plasma screens are better than LCD... but have u felt the heat that comes off those feckers!? (hence - how much leccy do they use?)

I would also say that when choosing a screen size... work out what u think ud need for ur room... then buy the size up from that.

sanjoy, that's exactly my stand. It's OK. I would prefer the TV on the wall but it would be too high above my fire.

Got the following catalogue in the office, some good stands and vesa plate( the industry standard plate fitting on the rear of TFTs, LCDs, plasmas etc) mounts.

from seloc

(of all places) Woolworths have just started selling a 32" HD LCD for £399. 8ms response, HDMI-HDCP, YUV, 2xScart(RGB), VGA, S-video.

The label stuck on the front reads 'Techsonic' but apparently they're rebranded Thomson TV's. This TV to be precise :

There's a long thread all about it here :

I bought one last weekend. Great TV for the money.

Hmmm... not sure I agree with that actually.... The new NEC plasmas for example have a lifespand of 40-60,000 hours which is the same as that quoted for LCD and plasma still has the best reputation for picture quality when you're talking about a video source. We still sell a lot more plasmas than LCD.

Sony plasmas are pretty cack anyway..... they often just bought the panels and speakers etc. from other manufacturers, bodged them together and stuck their badge on them. When LCD came on the scene, Sony said it would never work..... ended up costing them jobs across Europe when they had to spend mega bucks playing catch-up on folk like Samsung.

Dave.
Your obviously a man in the know and deal with this more than I do that's just what I've taken from looking around on the net and reading up on flat panels, I'm just a bit sceptical about buying a Betamax instead of a VHS ahah if you know what I mean

You are not far off there, now are we talking HD ready 1366 X 768 or True HD 1920 X 1080 ?
