The tophat washers are the ones that locate the dampers - I think the shape is to support the rubber bush and not allow twisting or sideways movement of the damper in its mounts.

You certain on that one Shug? I'm pretty sure castor is set using shims on the top mounts.....

Have a think about it mate.

Take the dampers out - can you move the upright in any plane other than the up-down of the suspension movement?

Moving the damper top mount on shims (which would be nothing to do with the top hat washers) would just alter the angle of the damper, therefore the rising (falling, actually) rate.

Shims are used on the steering arm to upright mounting to alter camber - you might be confusing that.

The only way to adjust castor is moving the bottom wishbone fore and aft, which is done via the washers in the wishbone root mount.

EDITED TO ADD - yeah, that's on the top wishbone and not the bottom, I named the wrong wishbone in haste, but the point still stands that it's nowt to do with the top hat washers that locate the top and bottom of the dampers.

Shug is right.
The top hats keep the rubbers in the shockers. The rim of the hat should be larger than the hole in the shocker to prevent it moving too much.

Might have missed the boat here but I have a front set lying in the garage doing nothing. Off a 59 plate exige. Not done many miles. A little grubby but do not leak and only taken off the car so I could fit adjustables. Will be a KH this Saturday 23rd. Could take them with me. As have been lying in the garage for a year you can have for a minimal fee if you want....

Thanks for the offer Martin, but just collected the car today from MMC with 2 shiny new shocks and 1 rear bearing. Not as bad as expected
