Released on Wednesday - Preliminary analysis from the Accident Investigation Board Norway now suggesting:

"Recent metallurgical findings have revealed features strongly consistent with fatigue in the outer race of a second stage planet gear in the epicyclic module of the MGB. It cannot be ruled out that this signifies a possible safety issue that can affect other MGBs of the same type. The nature of the catastrophic failure of the LN-OJF main rotor system indicates that the current means to detect a failure in advance are not effective.

The AIBN therefore recommends that EASA take immediate action to ensure the safety of the Airbus Helicopters H225 Main Gear Box".

There seems to be a bit of a battle of press releases going on. Of the failed parts collected it is difficult to determine what was the initiating event and what was a consequence. Of the differing scenarios either could be possible, but one option points to maintenance the other to design. The manufacturer is issuing statements to say the design is ok, while the investigation are still considering the evidence.

you're not wrong...

still way too much info not out there!

It's not at all clear if the epicyclic issues are the cause of the problems or an outcome.

What's also no clear is if the gearbox in the helo was a new one or a reconditioned one.

Agreed, they have to sort this out, if it turns it will fail at some point, but this is happening too often.
