They do cost Simon, Mike Stout who lives down the road from me had one installed when he bought his house two years ago. He replaced his oil boiler, for the full ground loop system, Nibe 12Kw GSHP, immersion cylinder, plumbed into existing radiators, he paid £24K up front as he did not take the loan, and no matter how you look at it, he is getting a return of £42K plus along with much lower energy costs.

My advantage is that the complete system was installed when the house was built along with underfloor heating, I paid nothing extra for that, and over the two years I can compare my costs with Tut Towers, a total of £2,100/year against oil/coal/logs/electricity at £9,200. Granted TT was a bigger house but we only heated a third of it, we shut the rest down when the kids left.

Even if the Dimplex had not failed I would still have gone ahead once I looked at the sums, it seems mad that I would agree to ditch a perfectly good HP and replace it with an equivalent one, but if you can find any fault with my figures then point it out for me in case I missed something.

ps:- I mentioned that if you live in a gas area you do not qualify for the loan, which if you are starting from scratch means forking out up to £20K. However the rest applies, an electricity bill of under £2K which covers complete usage, and a return every quarter of £4 to £6K/year depending on the energy from the HP that you are using. This is based on the Energy Report for your house that is carried out by the installer, in my case for a modern, well insulated, 220sq/m house. The larger the house and the less well insulated, the higher your RHI payments will be up to a maximum of 31,000kw/hrs/year. The rate is just going up to 19.55/unit. I pay 10.3p to my supplier, but due to the way that SE calculate it that translates into a meter reading of 20,000Kw or £2,100 to e.on.

Our installations were by Iain Thomas, an old Elise owning S_E friend that now owns Black Isles Renewables (BIR), so I probably got a good deal, and I have no qualms about installation, quality, or back up.
