Re: Bad accident

Just spoken to Isobel and his eldest daughter who is a doctor. Not too good I am afraid. Both arms are broken, left one not too badly, but the right one is very badly smashed from upper arm through to the shoulder. Sounds as if the bones have splintered, they are operating this morning so will know more later. They can do wonders nowadays so hopefully they can pin everything back together.

His right ear is mangled which is where all the blood came from but amazingly he was not cut anywhere else. Back and legs are both fine.

He must have broken his left arm holding onto the wheel as there was no damage to that side and the wheel was intact, so an indication of the force. Isobel said to ask me what speed he thought he was doing, he reckoned 40 and I would have thought 40-45, and whether he would be able to buy the wreck back from the insurance company to get the engine. A lad after my own heart.

He can also remember more of the accident now, he thought the road went straight after the bend, whereas it was a chicane going into a hidden dip. I think he may have seen the road running straight on the other side of the dip.

Fingers crossed for him that they do a good job on his arm/shoulder.

Wishing for a fast recovery.

I don't know driving in another way which isn't risky. Each one has to improve himself. Each driver has its limit. My limit is a little bit further than other's.

Thanks for the update tut - Great to hear that there's no neck / back / lower limb damage.

These sort of RTA injuries are less common nowadays, as most modern cars are fitted with at least a drivers airbag - When it deploys, it tends to push the drivers arms away, preventing the driver from 'bracing' themselves on the steering wheel. (I'm sure people have seen images of accidents in which the steering wheel is bent completely out of shape, due to the forces involved).

Orthopaedic surgery can work wonders these days, so fingers crossed for a good outcome - I'm sure he'll be back behind the wheel long before the summer's out!

As I said before, he was fortunate to have someone with him, who had the presence of mind to react appropriately, given the situation... :thumbsup

I think you did superb Tut as Im not so sure most people would be able to remain calm and level headed (me included)in a situation like this.
Send my best wishes to him and his family and please keep us updated on how he is doing.

Brian's operation has now been postponed until tomorrow.

Visiting hours are 1400-1630 and 1900-2000. I am booked in for an Endoscopy on Thursday so will see him then if not before.

 :(

Had met and spoken with Brian a couple of times - SIDC last month and mainly at the Speedfair last year. I want to add my wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

Tut - Well done, particulalry in overpowering the natural desire to try and remove him from the car. Head injuries give out a disproporionate amount of blood and it can be quite frightening to see someone covered in the stuff.

Ah. Thanks for posting that detail, Tut. Brian and I just met over pre-session bacon rolls that morning, and we were discussing his gold-wheeled S2.

All the best again, Brian.
