I really fancy the 6 speed quaife conversion . . . I think it would transform the car . . . what are the 5 speed CR box ratios and final drive ?

on a 4.2:1 final drive

Gives me a theoretical 140mph at 7krpm in 5th and the biggest difference between gears is a 1768 rpm drop between 2nd & 3rd, as opposed to 2168 rpm with the standard box. Cruising at 80 tuts will be about 4krpm

A tradeoff I'm more than happy to make :thumbsup

Incidentally, about the same as the 111R. Obviously more sound deadening in it - although her stage 2 makes up for that... :roll:

It is the same one that is fitted tothe mini, and it can apparently simulate a 6 speed, was just a thought.... although you do need an EU3 MEMS to control it

I'd imagine it'd be heavy and equipped with a torque converter - old tech now methinks. And if you're gonna simulate a 6 speed, why not use a 6 speed conventional auto

The one benefit these boxes had for normal cars was the ability to hold the engine at peak torque throughout acceleration, then drop revs to a cruising amount. But it sounds like a scooter doing it.

Surely you don't want to hold the engine at peak torque - you want to hold it at peak power ... unless you don't want to accelerate as fast as possible, of course ;-)

Inspired by Shug I decided to give one of the spare boxes I have a bit of a re-work. Sort of along the lines of what he has shown. Apart from releasing the circlip from the top of the main shaft its really quite straight forward as long as you are methodical and don't mix up the gears. Used a really good guide here which you will need to register to use but worth it if you are planning on having a go.
This wasn't quite the same as you may or may not notice from the photo's, the one really obvious difference is the Quaife ATB that and I took the opportunity to upgrade/renew all the bearings.

Reminds me... I really should do something with the standard box I have in the garage or the failing CR box I have on the car ... and soon... FF is fast approaching!!! :?

is 4000 revs at 80mph not normal ??

my wifes s2 elise does this

Yes, for S2 the gearbox position is reversed: standard cars have close ratio box, VVC cars have a weird box where 2nd is really long and 3/4/5 are closely spaced, giving reasonable cruising RPM and yet most of the benefits of a CR box (albeit that you need to do 70-odd in second for maximum acceleration/track use). For S1, standard cars had a long box (5th being a cruising gear) while the VVC has a close ratio box.

Mike - no fair, yours is shinier :) I used the same guide - really useful, isn't it? I was really lucky with the box I bought as it'd been rebuilt a thousand miles ago with all new steel bearings and then the car either went into a ditch, or some other mishap.

Planning to pop over to the old dears driveway tonight and lift the box back onto the engine and bolt it up, so I can get it all back together tomorrow. Jack, bits of wood and best swear words packed and ready to go... Will remember and take pix of it in it's current state, along with the throttle linkage.

For S2 vvc (111S) it's actually 1&2 which are slightly shorter but 3rd and 4th much longer (5th a bit longer). Hence the big gap 2nd to 3rd on track:

I think the 3rd, 4th & 5th ratios are actually the same, 1 and 2 MUCH shorter but then all offset by the longer final drive...
