Flickering battery/alternator light

Post by daveskerr » Sun Mar 02, 2008 2:21 pm

Got my car back from MMC on Thursday after getting my resistor pack and diverter valve changed under warranty. Don't know if it is related but my battery light has started to flicker intermittently, maybe for 2/3 secs out of an hours journey and seems to be related to bumps in the road etc.Don't know if something has maybe been bumped/knocked when MMC have been working on the car??

Car starts no probs and is running okay , just a pain the the ar$e seeing the light flicker!
Did a search and saw that MacK had a similar problem:

Don't think the alternator is on its way out though. What else should I be checking? Hope somebody can point me in the right direction as my warranty has ran out as of Friday!

Cheers guys

David :)

My guess would be that the -ve side of the warning light that connects to the alternator has become loose. This would certainly account for the light coming on over bumps.

I've got a wiring diagram, but havnt done much work on the elise electrics yet so coulnt translate this onto where to look for connections in the real world... Except the alternator of course, and thats a bit awkward to get to... I'm sure somebody who knows how the wiring is routed will be along shortly :)

Loose battery cable? Not sure it would do this. Flaky regulator pack, flaky wiring at the alternator more likely. Even though it seems like it must be related to the work just done, don't assume it is - Elises break quickly enough that a double fault is not so unlikely :-)

Jinxed..... My fuel pressure regulator disintegrated tonight, spewing a LOT of petrol into the engine bay.... Ali from SLS was brilliant as usual and took delivery of the car from an RAC flatbed, then fixed the problem.... On the way home, I started to get the flickering battery light and now the car is dead.

I suspect the fuel has eaten either the alternator windings or the diode pack.

Off to poke it with a meter now :x

Thats bad luck Steve, whats the chances of that?!

The lights not appeared to have come back on today, maybe its the copious amount of pi$hing rain over the weekend that did it?!?!

Longer odds than the lottery i'd recon! I'd done 50 miles since the head change  On a plus point, I got the alternator sorted today though :)

Could be rain i suppose.... The light usually stays off as there is 12v applied to both sides of the circuit. If you got a drop of rain that earthed it temporarily, it would cause the fault youre describing i guess... My advice is to do nothing except keep an eye on it at the moment  :thumbsup
