Cam belts

Post by Rich H » Mon Jun 16, 2008 3:38 pm

Just thought I'd check, its 4 years for a cambelt isn't it? Changed mine with the head Aug 06 so should be ok for a while.

Was wondering last night about cam belts, is there any reason for the casting that runs around the bottom of the cam belt pulley? The one that stops cam belts being easy to change. Could it be chopped off so you can leave the bottom pulley in place?

(Hopefully) don't need ot do the belt for a while, but just wondered...

That casting is on the oil pump and I would imagine it's there to protect the belt in case anything were to get thrown up against it. Rovers didn't have under trays and were front engined.

When I was getting my car serviced at Ali's, he had an Elise in that had the alternator belt break and fly up into the cambelt  . I don't know if the bottom cover was there or not but I figure it would certainly help prevent such things happening.

Would have been my exige. I dont think the alternator belt broke, its just that the alternator was loose so when I landed through the chicane it fell off. The car was fine until clarks apart from the alternator belt noise, but it was then that it caught the cambelt and it was game over.

I read "casting" as "casing"

Probably not worth worrying about for the sake of a 4 yearly belt change, perhaps on the race cars?
