What versions have what bhp?
What versions have what bhp?
Ok, we're consider either an Elise or Exige, series 2 and a couple of years old.
However, we're unsure what horsepower they should be.
the S2 111S currently has a supposed 138hp, but i've read somewhere the slightly older ones have 160hp. Did any of the older S2 Elises have 160hp, or even 190hp without being a 111R?

Bear in mind, you're talking about two totally different engine installs. Newer cars are Toyota (S & R) the older 111S and standard S2s were Rover. Headline HP isn't the be all and end all though - look at the weight also.
The page above is very clear on the differences though.

Also make sure and check the RPM the power is produced at - not everyone likes the vtec like 'yota engineShug wrote:Bear in mind, you're talking about two totally different engine installs. Re: What versions have what bhp?
Thanks guys, but i'm still a bit confused.
Is there any way to tell what engine is fitted and what hp it's ment to have, with maybe a chassis number or something?
Reason i ask, we have a possible damaged 2004 Elise 111R with a "160hp" engine, available to buy, but we want to make sure exactly what engine it has. Seen a couple engines that had a Toyota cam cover, but in the ad it states a VVC K-Series with 160hp.

Re: What versions have what bhp?
If it's a 111R, it's a toyota and has 190bhp. If they're saying it's a 160BHP K series, it's not a 111R - they don't know what they've got.
Simple-ish breakdown:
S2 Standard - K series, 120bhp (no longer made)
S2 111S - K series VVC - 160bhp (no longer made)
S2 'S' - Toyota non VVTLi - 140?bhp
S2 111R (now renamed, just 'R') - 190bhp.

Re: What versions have what bhp?
My apologies, i ment to say a 111S
, so going by what you say Shug, it has the K-Series in it.
Being in the trade, Rovers are not our favourite cars. The amount of Rovers we've picked up the head gasket issues is scary. Someone told us Lotus didn't have half as many troubles with the engine when fitted to their cars...is that true?

there was a thread on here lately comparing when everyone got head gasket failure
lots of support on here for the k - even with the hg issues.

TBH, it's not the disaster that it seems like... Get AA Parts & Labour cover (as I'd advise anyone to have with an Elise - they are hand made in Norfolk by turnip farmers) And an HGF will cost you about £100 to fix (if that) Not a big deal. Plenty of plusses to balance out that negative.

Re: What versions have what bhp?
Lol didn't think it was true.
Trouble is, we've always known the engine to be useless after the first time the head gasket has went. If thats not the case with Lotus, then do they use a different gasket?

Re: What versions have what bhp?
It's a long story when you get into it - what you have to make sure is that the liner heights are correct (usually the cause) and the head hasn't gone soft. The gasket itself is usually just the symptom (unless they came with plastic instead of metal dowels). Like I say though, it's not such a huge problem that it should put you off.

Re: What versions have what bhp?
Indeed... long story! But to cut it short.... I have had a HGF recently, combined with a bottom end failure & this is what i'll be doing to fix it:
1. Deck block to achieve 5 thou liner stand proud - this prob is caused by a combination of block aging and distorting and cheapskate Rover using a single height of liners.
2. Fit uprated landrover oil rail...
3. My head is not soft, but does have porous areas in the casting, right round the fire ring area - i will be shimming it with a payen headsaver shim after a further skim.
4. Fit a pressure relief thermostat (PRT) to prevent thermal shock
There are many different gaskets to choose from, but landrover developed the Multi Layer Steel (MLS) gasket in conjunction with the oil rail and PRT to help cure their HGF probs with the K. MLS is only good if your liner heights are spot on though... else choose the std rover or Payen BW750 gaskets... But you really do want your liner heights correct.... really... you do.... It's never easy
