Newbie technical stuff

Post by knightofni » Wed Mar 11, 2009 12:45 pm

While the car was in MMC for a service they mentioned the following, among some other things that are either sorted or will be fixed shortly (new pads now fitted and anti-roll bar drop links getting fitted shortly).

* Oil leap (seep) at the sump.
* Heat shield mounting rusting.

I've been checking the oil and certainly don't see any leaking after parking. It must be losing a very small amount as the car uses very little oil. What's the deal with fixing it, just take off the sump and reseal, common toyota gasket or something special? Is this a common 111R issue? Am a little peeved they didn't call at the time to ask about fixing it while things were off, would have been cheaper.

Read quite about about folks replacing the S1 heatshields as they are flimsy, but will mine need replaced or will they just get a bit rattly? I gather the S2 shields are somewhat improved. Maybe see if someone can take a look at the next run. Don't mind replacing it, just wanna make sure it does need done!

I'm not a complete spanner phobic, but about 80%, hence asking if anyone has experience of these issues.

Oil seep could mean anything, there won't be a pudde because of the undertray but you should see oil staining on the undertray and sump. Take a pic if you can see anything. Changing the gasket would be a pain the the arse and take ages through I would suspect.

Heatsheild will rust from day one most likely. Personally I'd leave it until it rusts through, probaly take a couple of years...but that's just me... :thumbsup

Heatshields - TADTS - wait until it gives out!
Oil seep - I'd ask more questions!

Oil seep most likely not the sump but an oil seal plate which sits just above the oil filter, about the only bit lotus modded before fitting it in to the car and of course it leaks. Quite common on 2zz but not repaired mine yet (for obvious reasons), Ill have the engine out next week so ill let you know more, cheers Craig

Sorry for the delay but in the centre of this pic you will see a triangular plate, its this which is most likely leaking, cheers Craig.
