Looking to touch up some of the bad bits on the S160 over the winter ( I know it'll be like painting the Forth rail bridge) and have a question about the paint.
I've done a test patch at the back end and the paint looks pretty good although a little duller than the rest.
1. This may be due to me not being very good at this.
2. It still has the clear coat to come which will make it nice and shiny.
3. It doesn't need a clear coat just a damn good polish.
something else I've also considered is that I polish it so that it is all smart and shiny, remove the polish and then stick the clear coat on top. Not exactly how it's meant to be done but should look nice.
anyhoo any thoughts ?
Cheers
Davie

Re: Paint !
How big a patch you painting and are you using cans or touch up paint?
Re: Paint !
Sorry for the slow reply offshore and the queue for computers is frightening and when you get onto them they run at 1995 speeds so dont often bother....... its quite a big bit maybe 18" x 6" at the back so that probably answers the question about can or pen

Re: Paint !
You'll never get an exact paint match, so as long as you are okay with that then I would say 3 or 4 light coats of paint, then a couple of lacquer. Applying the lacquer is not easy though and I'd be nervous about doing it on my car, but again, it's all up to how good a finish you are looking for... If it's on a vertical piece of trim then keep it very light and build up over a period of a few hours. Once your done, bung a heater in front of it for best part of a day then buff it up. Wouldn't polish in between as you might get a reaction to the lacquer...
note: I'm no expert but have painted a few pieces on cars (albeit never a Lotus) myself.

Re: Paint !
I was thinking of polishing the paint before the clear coat went on but not sure. I bought a cheap oil heater from Argooose for the job and have made a wee tent around the back of the car which seemed to work nicely for doing the paint.
From what I've read about applying the clear coat it should be very light coats applied about 15 minutes apart.
Not home untill the 9th so have time to think about it, although this is probably too much time
