Garage Floor
Garage Floor
Was watching one of those home renovation programmes recently and they painted the dull garage floor with some sort of epoxy paint, and then sealed it with a clear coat. Got me thinking about doing it to mine. Anyone done this or similar?

Re: Garage Floor
I have used garage floor paint and no matter how well prepared and how long it's left to harden I have never managed to get a finish that doesn't lift with hot tyres
I think floor tiles or rubber matting might be my next option but would be interested to hear if you do get something hard wearing

Re: Garage Floor
I started off with garage floor paint.

I had the benefit of starting with a fresh concrete pad so did everything properly and used quality paint but, while it looked great for a year or so, it started to look a bit shabby and started lifting and flaking.
Last year I bought a heap of contract carpet tiles off eBay for about £100 and so far that seems to be working well.

I don't really do "oily stuff" but got enough tiles on the pallet that I could probably have covered it twice if any get dirty or mucky.

Re: Garage Floor
I did my garage floor with 2-part epoxy paint about 6 years ago.
It's lasted pretty well and has only just started to crack in a few places, the Impreza used to be in & out almost every day too.
Main point if doing yourself is that paint + epoxy goes off in approx 30 mins, so you need to work really fast.
Ideally 2-3 people so you can have one person doing the edges while 2 others attack the main area with rollers.
Also the cheap DIY store long handled rollers aren't strong enough, you need a heavy duty trade one, the cheap ones break!
Be prepared to bin all the rollers & brushes afterwards!

Re: Garage Floor
Cool thanks for the advice, might look into interlocking floor tiles first given garage is only a single, but failing that I'll grab my brothers for some help.

Re: Garage Floor
Also, you'll probably need 2 coats.
Once a tin is mixed it goes off, so you can't use the same tin for both coats.
The first is the worst as it needs to seal the concrete. The second went on very nicely!

I bought garage floor matting on a roll at Costco, quick to lay and very effective

Re: Garage Floor
My garage is about a week away from being completed (roughcast on today) and I'm going for the carpet tiles option also. Recycled/reclaimed tiles start at £1 per sq metre from Spruce Carpets (http://www.sprucecarpets.org.uk) in Glasgow

Re: Garage Floor
How do you stick this down to the floor ? I have looked at this stuff a few times but concerned how I would stop it lifting up at the joints where it butted up against the next roll.Doc883 wrote:I bought garage floor matting on a roll at Costco, quick to lay and very effective![]()

Any ideas how to build a dam? I tried a wooden strip and it didn't work very well.
