Window adjusters - Work of the Devil

Cannot believe the clever people at Lotus used a completely ridiculous window adjustment system. I needed to adjust mine and realised it was ceased with rust on the adjuster. Could not budge it at all. In the end I had to remove the window seal, window, winder mechanism in order to remove the window guides to get at the adjusters. I will now replace them with new ones. But WHAT A LOT OF WORK just to adjust a flippin window.

And dont get me started on the price of a new window door seal. Why do they have steel in there to rust anyway?

I'm doing a lot of work on the Elise before it goes back on the road and it strikes me that although there is very little steel in the car, the bits that are there have been completely neglected in terms of rust protection.

Whew, lets hope reassembly is better than disassembly

They were not the best feature of the Elise, very heavy, window used to fall off the clamps, very often a bad fit that needed to be adjusted, and I also thought that aluminium could have been used instead of steel.

The original Elise was designed without doors for lightness, but the brass insisted that they would be fitted. Would have made a big difference to the weight.

I ordered all the rusty bits from MMC but they haven't arrived yet. The window has never closed properly and I'm on a bit of a mission to fix all the stupid things that were never right when I got the car. Partial re-assembly (minus the adjusters) was thankfully easier than the rusty disassembly. This time it will be with LOTS of grease.

All new adjusters fitted (the stupid plastic bits with the now NON rusty double ended threaded bolts) all other parts cleaned, de-rusted, painted where needed and refitted.

Lots of faffing, adjusting and for the first time ever my windows close properly. Had to adjust the door hinge and swap the shims on one door but the thud instead of rattle when they close is worth it. When the front clam goes back on and lots of other bits too I'll be able to do the bucket test to see if the windows actually keep the rain out.
