Black Friday.

Post by tut » Fri Nov 28, 2014 10:13 am

Lying in bed watching TV news.

Great entertainment watching the stores around the Country, massive queues since 0300 and now the fighting has started. Grabbing items from other baskets, women rolling on the floor, sales staff being attacked, etc.

I feel at times as if I live in another world, how do their brains work?

From the Guardian, no less....
Blackett, Fischer and some mates had driven to Sainsbury’s at 12.45am after retreating from the “bedlam” of Tesco’s 24-hour Lea Valley store, where the Black Friday sale started at midnight. “Tesco was scary so we came here instead,” Blackett said.
Well Black Friday has come, and I was expecting Donald Fagan to be waxing lyrical about bankrupt bankers and feeding kangaroos. Instead we just get more retail mayhem....

Why? There was a sales boost anyway around the end of November (last pay day before Xmas to buy pressies etc) so now it's been targetted and you're getting some genuine bargains. Sure, there's a lot of pseudo-deals, but there are genuine savings to be had if you look properly.

Seems to me to be moaning about the advertising (no more nauseating than the whole Christmas season IMO) whilst ignoring the fact the consumer actually is getting deals. Trust me, they are out there.

Agreed, but like me I presume we buy them on line as I have been doing today, not join a baying mob outside Tescos.

True, the mobs are mental and I don't remember the UK seeing this outside Christmas Eve before.

Brilliant, gets all the idiots in one place at the same time and out of the way of the higher realms of society (i over e except after c, stupid English language). Clare asked me to buy a Google Chromecast for her from John Lewis. Could not even get onto the site, likewise Tesco, Argos, Curries etc, but no problem on Amazon and even the cheapest price.

Tesco's have had to close several stores, eight riot vans in convoy at one location, good day for putting your foot down as it looks as if half the police cars and ambulances are rather busy. Should not enjoy watching it, but unlike you lot I do not have a job.

The whole Black Friday branding in the UK seems to have come from nowhere this year. I can't remember it being so visual in previous years. Whilst it feels cheesy, it is good for the consumer as there do seem to be genuine and substantial reductions on certain products. I just cut through John Lewis at lunchtime and it was mobbed, but civilized. Queue at cashline was huge and I gave up going to local sandwich shop too, ....but all good for local businesses.

I am just pi$$ed off the projector I bought 2 weeks ago is £200 cheaper at the same retailer today due to their Black Friday sale.

Of course, it would be unethical for a family member to purchase a new one at a reduced price, then return it on the original expensive recipt......

Why? -Near rioting in some stores with Police closing shops, websites crashing - needless greed in order to get a handful of, what are presumably, loss leaders.
Nothing against sales per se but no need for the hype imported from America by retailers wanting a slice of the action

I agree on both fronts.

People fighting over crap £150 40 inch blaupunkt TVs is insane, and clearly a loss leader but I'm sure supermarkets will be relying on future years with not so great bargains to make up for it.

But there are some nice bargains to be had, and without the need to get off your rear and mix with the great unwashed.

For example, Sony's PS4 seems to have hit sub £300 with a game or 2 depending on your choice and it'll be a Christmas favourite.
The little Bose Soundlink Mini has been ~130 and a few more I've seen - and not bought ;)
Bargains nowadays in the the post Christmas sales tend to be few and far between, people are now given the opportunity to buy cheaper Christmas gifts at a time when they actually have some money, and sales are obviously up, surely that's all good.
