Gearbox...

Post by bertieduff » Fri Jan 05, 2007 5:11 pm

Never been very impressed with the box, soometimes struggling to find 3rd or reverse.

Now can't get reverse at all.

Pushing it backwards is good excercise, but I'm getting funny looks. And very wet  :D

Any thoughts? Is this common?

I never ever needed my linkage adjusted, but i did loose a clip twice, which gives the same problems. If you know where to look, excellent, if not, i can dig out a photo for you.

:D Dammit ed, clams off and block out already. :D

Is it easy to adjust tho? Is it a waste of time giving it to my local garage? Can I do it myself? Should I do it myself? I have a large hammer, if I hit things will it work?

As the ginger one says, it's probably a clip come adrift. If you know where they go, it can simply be a case of clipping it back on, but the clip has probably gone walkies. Not a difficult job.

happened to me when I first got the car, was a PITA. All I had to do was sweep the leaver accross the gate to allow reverse to engage. Sometimes going from 2nd accross to reverse worked too. I'd try that first before getting your hands dirty! :)

Half an hour with a socket set and a cable clip from Rover *Might* well be all you need. Unless its a Cosworth gearbox....

There are 2 adjust points, one is the braket where the clips go the other is a little tie rod with 2 rose joints, but if it worked before ok it should work again....

good luck!

What you are checking is that the cables run as per the photo and that the clips are present as they are here (cable-tied in place)

It's all pretty obvious when you get in there.
