Picked up the Elise today. There's so much I could say about it, but certainly the handling/balance is as 'sublime' as I've heard it described and the feedback through the steering is an absolute revelation after years of driving power-assisted cars (started out on unassisted cars, mind – but I don't remember them feeling as great as the Elise!).

My only concern is that the shape of the seats might not be ideal for me – feel that my head is being pushed a bit further forward than I'd like, which may aggravate a chronic neck problem of mine... will need to see how that goes. Worst comes to the worst I might have to seek a replacement seat.

Apart from that, I'm absolutely thrilled to bits! :D

Good news Tommy.

A number of genuine alternative seats can be had - from mildly "upgraded" Lotus versions to full race-derived things. One of 'em is bound to work!

Take the time to get used to it...you might find it works better than you realise. The seating position can be a bit different from mainstream, however Lotus designed it carefully to suit more than just Mr Average.

Thanks Campbell.

Indeed, I'll give the OEM seats a good chance before looking at alternatives. Funnily enough they felt more natural today... think that I may have been trying to adopt too much of an upright posture.

Cheers :)

You're probably a bit tense, I'm guessing, whilst getting used to the new, low-to-the-ground driving position - relax into them and make sure your arms are not too stretched out

I found the S2 Elise seats (pre-Probax) comfy for a couple of hours at a time.

Probably the best single piece of advise you can give anyone new to an Elise is to relax, full stop. In contrast to most 'normal' cars that do their best to try and insulate you from everything, the Elise talks to you all the time through every contact point - too much sometimes. So when you're new to it, you end up hanging onto the wheel with a death grip, tensing everything up as it feels like it's jumping all over the place. The second you relax your grip and let the wheel move about, you realise that it doesn't change where the car goes, it's just the front wheels reacting to bumps and camber. Once you've relaxed that, you kind of just melt into the car and it's no hassle - the whole experience becomes much more flowing and you certainly don't get sore neck and shoulders. Trust the car and you can drive along in pootle mode no problem with one finger and thumb on the wheel just to guide it.

Thanks again for the helpful suggestions folks. Yes, I reckon I probably was a little more physically tense than I had realised ;)

Had a nice cruise today in the cool sunshine and Saturday traffic (!)... starting to bond with the car now. Planning something a little more spirited out in the sticks tomorrow morning (weather/traffic permitting) :)
