Recommend me some driving shoes

but if I knew I was going out for a long drive or a specific driving event I would favour shoes more suited to the occassion.

More suited to what occasion? Driving?

Does it really make that much difference? I'm genuinely interested as to why people wear specific things on their feet to go out for a drive? Maybe it's because I drive like a tard no-matter what shoes I'm wearing.

I'm doing some hillcliming this year and breathed a sigh of relief when I found out it's only the suit, gloves and helmet that are required and not the racing boots. Maybe I'm in the minority here but I just like something that's comfy and don't think the difference of 3mm less sole make my shoes a "precision implement" .

You'd be surprised how much more feel and control you have with some proper sparco race boots, even over speed cats, and especially normal trainers.

In saying that, I once sat in the pax seat with FD at the helm in hillwalking boots and it wasn't slowing him down at all.

Since I bought the Elise - 1999 - I have had "preferred" shoes for driving it.

This has been brought into sharper focus since I got the Evora - the carpets (!) make the clearance to accelerator even tighter than the Elise. And the pedal box geometry appears oriented to heel and toe. Or small Japanese women with bound feet.

I've really noticed the impact. It's more about safety and confidence than outright feel/feedback for me.

I also have some shoes I def will not drive in. Including hiking boots, walking trainers, and my thigh length PVC numbers.

So I'm trying out some modestly priced Pumas. They've been dispatched. Stay tuned for a road test this weekend!

I understand the clearance for the pedals depending on size of feet etc.

If I'm wearing more "delicate shoes" then I find that on a long drive that the feel of the pedals is more of an annoyance than a good thing. Also - Like Dom, I don't heel&Toe and am more of a side to side rocker which I just can't do with smaller shoes.

Maybe I just have small feet and drive a car with wide pedals?!?!

I've got a pair of really thin Alpinestars race boots, I needed something really narrow when I had the Caterham as the pedal box was so narrow. Even with size 7 feet, I couldn't wear my work shoes when driving it as I'd be snagging more than one pedal at a time! Previously I've used kart boots (plenty on ebay for a reasonable price) which have been really comfortable to wear.

I also like the look of the Piloti shoes but they're hard to come by. Having a quick look, it turns out the UK distributor is in Perth.

I bought a pair of Piloti Tifosi a few years back from Barney (ex-Munich Legends) at Classic Heroes.



Rather comfy - Sole is a tad thicker than the Speedcat, bit still pretty decent for driving.

(I understand Piloti went bust at some point, but were bought over and the new owners have started up production again).

Mine arrived today

They are a neat fit. But, like bowling shoes, I consider that an advantage.

Lisa ushered us all out for a quick test drive on my local racetrack.

They work well. Just need to wear them in a bit.

I've got them on now actually...chortle.
