Scary Site. Does anyone know how the Elise holds up in a pretty bad smash? I haven't seen any crash test data (is there any?)...

I have heard various people say an Elise can take a hell of a whack from say a 4x4 range rover, and the range rover would be the write off.

On BBC news a few months back I saw a picture of an MX5 which had been involved in a crash up north I believe. Female Lawyer or Solicitor, can't remember, was killed. The car was absolutely crumpled all over.

Would love to know how the Elise is designed from an Impact Safety point of view.

Dude you stalking me?   Slept in this morning, normally start around 6:30 - but too tired lately.

I read on a site, I think elises.co.uk that a guy who did crash into the back of a high end truck was decapitated. Ouch.

Where do you work - we should grab a coffee and catch up. I work in the old BBC headquarters, on the corner of Queen Street and St Andrews SQ. Or nearly the corner...

The whole front end is a replacable crash structure, but in an accident it's your luck. I crashed a metro (1 euro ncap star) into a ditch at 80mph and walked out. my mate in a fiesta did something similar at a reduced speed and broke a leg.

The moral is don't crash it hurts.

Good excuse to go for a spin! I find myself running out of milk, needing to visit mum, having to go for cat litter more often than ever now ;)

Scary stuff.

I hope you dont mind me mentioning this Del.

I would advise that I was driving behind Del two years ago when he rolled his Elise at 60mph. It was quite a scary moment watching the wee car tumble twice. Luckily his son was in my car.

Luckily Del was somehow unscratched but the two month old car was written off. The way it is built as a crumple zone protected the cockpit. However whilst the car protected him I don't think that we should forget just how dangerous the roads are and that speed is. There are all kinds of factors that make the roads dangerous, adverse cambers, spillages, other drivers, speed, lapses in concentration etc. There were at least two other incidents in the same spot in short succession so it looks like the road was to blame on this occaision.

I know there are guys on here who work for the emergency services and they could tell you real horror stories.

I know that Del and I both remember this event and it is a constant reminder to us how fragile life is.

Take it easy out there. :thumbsup

Notwithstanding the other posts in this threat, the Elise is generally a very strong wee customer indeed. The chassis is extremely stiff and well put together and - my guess only - the rollbar setup provides more strength if you roll than the average monocoque. It scores over other soft-tops in that the rollbar is near and above (usually!) your head height, whereas the MX-5s etc have less protection around there.

Team Techno (Robin and Ross) had an almighty escape from a very nasty, reasonable high speed off, but as with well designed crash structures lots of bits crumpled/came off etc and preserved the main tub

...However luck played a large part cos not even a strong tub will save you if you career off a cliff.

Not sure that I'd want to take on a Range Rover, but I have never felt exposed in the Elise.

As others have said though...just don't end up there in the first place :-)

Yes the roads are no place to race I have had a couple of offs in my day and they where caused by me driving quite quickly and coming across another idiot (woman in red toledo driving in middle of road for example!) avoiding them only to dump it in a ditch and getting billed for a hedge that I didnt hit!
