Won a phone...

Post by Rich H » Thu Jul 19, 2007 11:53 pm

I have apparently won a prize for least stupid idea

I have been working on a project to make looking up some stuff at work quicker. Little more than that, we have loads of deals but they are jumbled up and near impossible to search. With a bit of excel coding I made a spreadsheet that looks them up for you with a minimum of effort.

Got an e-mail form a random bloke asking for an unlocked version. I politely told him to fcuk off and do his own hard work. Turns out he was one of the big wigs

Now the interesting bit, I had been forwarded for this prize by some bloke I have never met or even heard of... Looks like he is trying to re-package my work (It's taken months) and pass it off, at least partially, as his own. Up until today, I was totally oblivious to this...

However, I get the e-mail back saying that I have won a nice shiny phone (PDA sat nav thing, dunno really yet, pic below) and please can we have the unlocked version.

Sadly for Mr big wig he copied in my bosses, bosses, boss out of courtesy. She, knowing what I have been working on, (She sanctioned it's trial) promptly threw a force ten wobbler as she was planning on a big release of my project once the trial had run, but now her big plan was scuppered so wrote to all and sundry telling them where the project had originated (ie my idea) and how it was down to me and the support of her dept (Fair enough) not Mr plagiarizing tosspot...

Now I find myself in the centre of a power struggle and I'm getting copied into e-mails to directors and executives. Nothing beats a bit of office politics :D I don't really know what is going on (Blissfully ignorant) but I am currently keeping my head down while the sh!t is flying, but I'm enjoying the show.

They are talking about making my project national, then public then world wide! Dunno how much is true or even practical, but I'll happily ride it out. They are promising all sorts of things at the moment. (I need to fiddle a working Porsche 924 and a new Exige S into the reward package  )

And I have a shiney new phone...

Resign, take your spreadsheet, and run......

Its your copyright to an extent, depending of course on what your contract says... In my place, anything radical I do on office time is the property of the Firm; I doubt they'll have that written into the contract of a phone flunky though (no offence  )

Sounds like you should be due a heck of a lot more than a phone :)

Anything I do in office time is the property of my company... it's a global condition for anyone we hire in the world.

Guess they own a whole bunch of postings on SE2...

Pretty sure it is in my contract that they own it. They can have it. I'll keep the passwords....

They are there in the code (Which is clearly the company's property ;)) but am I obliged to actually tell them the password? It will function perfectly well, but it will not be possible to amend or up date it.

Not impenetrable (Its only excel) but still a PITA, also the coding is somewhat eccentric. My brain works in odd ways and it's sort of a bit organic, as in bits have been added here and there which is what makes it so useful, the core is simple but the additional bits are a little convoluted, and quite a bit of it uses brute force means (Blunt instrument coding) not exactly efficient but it works perfectly well. I doubt that anyone would want to try and amend it.

I could rewrite the lot and streamline it a bit better, but if it isn't broken...

I'm enjoying the show from my lowly POV. My name is getting banded about with the execs and it has been acknowledged as my work now. I'll just wait and see...

(Also I'll check my contract!! :D)

Off to pick up my replacement steed now, my Elise is into the body shop today!
