Post by Andy A » Sat Feb 25, 2006 4:32 pm

Hi everybody! :wave
My name is Andy and I'm new to this forum, thought it best to introduce myself before EF next weekend

Anybody notice the lonely vx booked for EF? Well that's me! canny wait!
Would also like to ask about brakes, was thinking on changing rear pads is this a bad idea just before a track day? not sure how long it would take for them to be working 100%
any thoughts?

Looking forward to EF next week
See ya there!
Ps- Novice here so please be careful driving around spinning vx220

Andy

Don't see a problem changing the pads before EF, just give them a bit of a run-in beforehand. Some people reckon hammering them right from the start is best, others say do a few hundred miles to bed them in. What pads you thinking of fitting?

Change them but don't mix pads. If you haven't got Mintex on the front, change them too.

Welcome 8)

Are you registered on vx220.org.uk as well ?
Focus ST estate, i3s and more pushbikes than strictly necessary.

....did i ever tell you about the Evora and VX220 i used to own?

3mm on the rears should be okay, unless you really fire into 'em. Having said that, EF should be a brake tester, so might be safer to change.

Bedding in procedure is to get them good and hot then let them cool completely. Method I use:

Find a closed test track (of course)

1. Do a little gentle braking over a couple of days with them to make sure the pads fit the shape of the disk first (unless they are both brand new)

2. Accelerate to ~100mph on a straight bit of 'test track'

3. Brake to the point of lockup down to walking pace (but don't stop)

4. Repeat this 5 or six times, then take the long road home (braking gently)

This gives them a good hard sha-- heat cycle and then lets them cool properly. To be totally anal about it, park in gear and don't apply the handbrake.

They should then be good. They will get better as they cycle a few more times, but this will stop them overheating on track and wearing too much or fading.

If you're going to change them, it's not a horrible idea to change them all anyway. It's good to have them all pristine for the start of the trackday and you know you won't have one end going off faster than another.
