thinking of changing my old red konis for pro tech coil overs, are they any good or should i go the bilstein way.they seem to cost about 400.
advice would be appreciated.
pro tech coil overs.
I think the dampers are quite good, but the company is a bit hit-and-miss. Both Simon Arnot and I got the wrong spring lengths and needed to spend money on shortening them and then using helper springs to prevent the springs rattling on full droop.
If you're going to order them, make sure you tell them your target ride height and that you expect the springs to remain under compression (and thus make contact with the collars) at full droop when set for that ride height. That way it will be their problem to supply shorter springs if they screw up and send the wrong ones!
You might also want to consider replacing the mounting brackets if your car is an older one - the old style rear mounting brackets have a habit of cracking along the bolt holes, and the front brackets got changed for type with a wider flare, which helps prevent damper-to-bracket contact. I would just order up a set of brackets from Lotus or Eliseparts:
eliseparts brackets
If ordering the eliseparts brackets, you might as well get the dual setting type as this might help in fitting the new dampers (but beware in this case you might need to drill a new 8mm mounting hole at the front on each side - it's easy enough to do though).
Cheers,
Robin
P.S. Looking at the pictures of the eliseparts ones, they don't appear to have the reinforcement that the later S1 type have - I suspect they are made out of thicker steel instead.
