PC Help

Post by Gareth » Mon Aug 20, 2007 11:32 am

I've got an external hard drive I use for throwing all my crap on there to hopefully keep the laptop running sweet.

My laptop although only new is running real slow. While browsing 'My Pictures' it crashed last night. When working, it does take a few seconds for each pic to load (maybe 4/5). Takes a good 40secs for small video files to play on youtube.

Could it be that I need more RAM or do I have a virus.
Everyday or so I use CC cleaner. I do have virus software but it's not detected anything.

Any help?

what kind of spec is the laptop? Is it running vista or XP??

Generally, this kind of behaviour is a lack of memory / too many programs running at once. Even with no windows open, many laptop builds (esp toshiba :flame ) seem to have 10 dozen things running in the system tray.

More info please!

Cheers,

Steve

okdoke, sony arn't "too bad"

can you right click in the menu bar at the bottom of the screen and goto "task manager". Goto the performance tab and post back the following:

Physical Memory (MB) section:

All bits please!

System section:
Processes
Page file

Ta,

I run Vista on 3 PC's and my 3GB memory machine is the only one I would describe as quick enough, and thats *just*.

Vista requires so much in terms of hardware, be very wary of an upgrade until SP1...

Last week a few "upgrades" for vista were released by MS to improve performance. Can't remember the links, but they are seperate to the windows update process.

Can you post back your:

Graphics card type and memory
Amount of system ram
CPU type and speed
Vista Score (if you know how to get it).

Double click the 'My computer' icon on the desktop while holding down 'Alt' on the keyboard.

You really want 1GB as a min of RAM for Vista. Laptops as a rule are slower than desktops but it should run much quicker than you are getting out of it.

Did you answer about the updates? Was it slow beforehand?

Also do you have defender (I think it comes as part of vista). If so update it and run a system scan using it.

there should be a "rating" in the info from the my computer icon too - can you post back what it is?

Also the info from the task manager will show how much system resources are currently in use..

If you're running on vista with 1gb of ram, im 99% sure your problem is a lack of memory. My machine uses 1gb just to get to the desktop!
