If they want to win anything then they would need to pick a Scottish manager of course.

imho that is complete b0ll0cks!
Look at the British Lions tour the other year - one Scotland player (Cusiter) got about 5 minutes in the Tests! Hardly a "British" lions team!
Lets be honest, im not convinced that he is your best player!?

Sorry but where is my narrow minded anti English sentiment? :?

I am being realistic, England has a far larger player base to select from and a far better one at that. Apart from Craig Gordon (and no chance of him being picked even with the current hilarious standard of English goalkeepers, remember all the jokes about Scottish goalies?), I cant think of any player that would get a game.

Mind you a few Scottish players might make the team, what was the saying they used in the 70's and 80's? Something along the lines of "the best teams should have 3 Scottish players but no more than that or you'll have trouble"

A Scottish manager would be no bad thing though, might get people playing with a bit of passion.

How the hell do you get rid of racism, apartheid, separatism with an attitude like that?

And if a manager can not pick a national team based on ability, then kick him out of the job.

Ever heard of one of the greatest teams ever, The Lions, captained by Scots Gavin Hastings and Finlay Calder, whose team had nine Scottish players in it. Does that sound like favouritism?

I agree with all of that...

Also. Who knows what nationality the coach would be... And with regard to players, IIRC the Olympic football tournament has a max age limit (or I'm sure it used to have). And with that in mind... who knows which great teenage players of today - from all 4 nations - will be great Olympic team members of 2012...

Just found a reference... players must be under 23 (with 4 players >23 per squad).

I know nothing about these sports, although I understand they enjoy some amount of popularity, but I agree with tut on this one...

:withstupid I have lived in Scotland for 11 years had a Scottish Grandmother and get sick of the racism. Went to a pub to cheer Scotland on in the football a couple of weeks ago and got surrounded by a group of tossers chanting English Scum. I have a Scotland football shirt signed by the whole team that I paid a fortrune for in a charity event and cheer Scotland on at Murrayfield nearly every game obviously I cant do that once a year  We are all British for Gods sake.

Of yes 11 years in deepest darkest Ayrshire has taught me all I need to know about fighting my country cousins every Friday night at kicking out time  One of the cases when I was in court last week for Jury service was an attempted murder that came from two rival Ayrshire families having a feud

I would just like to strongly voice that I am mightily pissed off at some the comments on this thread!

Just because I dont break out the Union Jacks at the thought of having a GB team does not require knee jerk comments that I am somehow racist (aren't we all the same race anyway? :? ) and anti English.

I expected better from here :(

edit: for the avoidance of doubt I'll add a half dozen  next time I am being flippant or posting with tongue in cheek.

Kenwood, im sure most comments are not directed at you. More at the fact that anti-english "joke" often gets taken too far. I fear its the sort of thing that will ruin this country as too many people imho voted for devolution for the wrong reasons.

Politically and technically absolutely correct, I am British, however I have no great passion towards 'feeling British'. I am Scottish first and British a very distant second, I appreciate many other see themselves as British first and Scottish/English second. Sorry but I got a wee bit peeved at the racist implications. I'll stop going on about it now.

I think this thread has perhaps gone off on a tangent, the reasons for the SFA's decision is not a deep seated hatred of English or childish ' It's ma baw' stuff.

Its probably utterly paranoid, even FIFA has stated they dont see what the fuss is about but it has always been the SFA's stance on the subject. They feel it could have potential to jeapordise (sic prob) our international status. I dont think its that big an issue to be worth getting annoyed at.

sometimes i feel very scottish.
sometimes i feel very british.
sometimes i feel european.
sometimes i feel human.
sometimes i feel a very nice lady :P

on topic, its rediculous and makes me think that the powers that be in the scottish game smoke lotta dope to get themselves that paranoid.

its the olympics, where taking parts counts.........

off topic, my dad has suffered incredible racism since moving up here and making a home with my mum 34 years ago.
it makes me sick some of the small minded scottishness comments that inbread loosers make.
most normal people can give and receive good fun banter - but some go as far as thinking that the enemy is all around and needs to "get a good kicking, the english scum".
you have no idea how much that makes me angry.
fcukwits.

Christ on a bike, we could get into a fair old debate about the state of the "Union" and patriotism v racism but I think the SFA have a long held fear that once we start having GB teams at Olympics, we might be expected to follow suit in FIFA and UEFA competitions. Kenny hinted at this earlier.

I dont really care if they go for a GB Team at the Olympics. I would fully expect it to be full of England players but media and population pressure would dictate it so, not ability!

I would suggest that the comments "I'd love Scotland to do well" coming from Anglos living North of the Border are not echoed quite so readily down south. Football is different from rugby, athletics etc. in that the following is almost "tribal" at both club and international level - I think the England following has become more and more "nationalist" in the last 20 years - no problem with that from where I'm standing, but why are Scots branded racist when we do the same?

I think what would get to me is the GB football team win Gold, and the media report would probably report it as "ENGLAND WIN GOLD AT OLYMPICS!" Much like ENGLISHMAN LEWIS ON VERGE OF F1 CHAMPIONSHIP! But BRITON MURRAY WINS 3RD ATP TITLE. At times in it would appear we are all British when it suits!
