Norwich Union Pay-As-You-Drive

Thought this might be useful to someone.

Norwich Union recently quoted me £410 for my S2 111S on a pay as you drive basis. This consisted of a £250 base premium with the remainder paid on a monthly basis as and when I drove the car (based on 5k miles pa). They supply a tracking device for your car to monitor when and where you drive it and you then just settle the itemised bill from them at the end of each month.

Considering that the much hyped A Plan and Chris Knott were both trying to charge me the thick end of £1000 I thought this was thoroughly decent value.

In the end though, good old Elephant came up with the goods for £350. But Norwich Union could still be a good punt for someone who doesn't do a lot of miles

£350 is quite cheap , what are your details with regards age , accidents, points and no claims etc?

I'm not sure if I like the idea of my insurance company having a tracking device in my car. Just call me paranoid....

I wonder if the tracker can monitor/record speed?

"Can I make a claim please, I was doing 50mph when I lost it"

If you phoned Chris Knott back they'd probably have beaten sh*t by 10%.
I wouldn't want to claim with elephant having experienced the shambles of the admiral (who own elephant) claims dept.

I assume you did make sure you took the 12 month policy instead of elephant's 10 month bonus accelerator that only they tend to accept policy? If not you may find yourself trapped with them for an extra year.

I'm with Neil too, there's no way an insurance company is putting a tracker anywhere near my car!

That quote was based upon 35yr old male, 18yrs NCB, no points, no accidents, 2 named drivers, garaged, 5k miles limit, 12 month policy, 250 excess.

I did call Chris Knott after I had the quote from Elephant and they couldn't have been any more unhelpful or disinterested if they had tried. There was no offer to beat the quote by 10%, it was a case of nah thats the best we can do, take it or leave it.

A Plan were very helpful but said they couldn't compete.

I wouldn't be too keen on the tracker myself from the point of view of extra wiring/hole drilling etc in my car but the bottom line is if you happen to be driving like a lunatic and have a big crash, you ain't going to get away with telling the insurance company you were driving at 28mph. The traffic cops are gonna see you in court - tracker or no tracker, witness or no witness.

I see you have just bought an Elise, that'll be why Chris Knott weren't interested, they aren't keen to insure anyone on an Elise/Exige who hasn't owned it for a bit.

Not sure why A-plan would have been uncompetitive given your circumstances. Mind you.. the Elephant quote seems pretty darn good!!

Your age/points/NCB/Situation seems similar to the wife & I... but we were fine with A-Plan (£600) and that was including type 1 business use for both of us. strange...

Did you try Lotus Esteem for insurance.

I'm paying less than that for a modded S2 (ok - it's not in it's first flush of youth now) and have a similar background. Unlimited mileage too.

They both did say that if I came back to them next year after I had owned the car for 12 months then they should be much more competative. I can understand this in a way (eg guy been driving Fiat Panda all his life, jumps into Elise, too much power, big crash etc) but I would have thought the fact that I have been driving for 18yrs without so much as a parking ticket would have counted for something. Luckily Elephant agree !

Mac, do you have a number or URL for Lotus Esteem ? Never tried them but I've got a 14 day cooling off period with Elephant so I might give them a try.
