Steering rack

Post by skellyjohn » Mon Nov 12, 2007 5:43 pm

I'm on my second (non Lotus) steering rack. The car was MOT'd last week and although it passed ok, they said that their was some play in the steering rack. I hadn't reall noticed.
Is it possible to refurb it or do i need a new one. I recall it being expensive. :(

When I tried to get the rack in my 98 S1 reconditioned, Geary at Eliseparts explained that they were no longer offering the service as the reconditioned racks used to regularly fail once refitted (i.e within his warranty period I guess). Don't know if mine was a Titan rack or not though?

Maybe just a sales pitch but in the end I bought a Nitron upgraded rack which felt brilliant (but then if my old one was so worn as to fail the MOT, anything would probably have felt brilliant... ).

the only troublesome job is taking the rack out and putting it back in (talking from experience :( ) you have to adopt the lotus position.

Falkland told me that they can get racks reconditioned for £120 - i reckon you'll have to pay Lee to do the strip & fit though.

Might be worth speaking to Ali?

Speak to Stu, I gave him a nylon bush to copy into brass for me a while back. If he's still got it he can make more bushes up. It's easy to replace them yourself.
