i-pod connecting head unit

Post by MacK » Tue Mar 21, 2006 2:55 pm

Maybe more for technical section, but might get more responses here.

I am wanting a new head unit for the Elise, one which has a cable to connect my i-pod too, not an aux in but a proper i-pod interface.

Are many available, I was in Halfords at lunch time but they only had 2or3, does anyone have any recommendations Andy maybe? Not wanting to spend over £200 and don't want complicated or cluttering boxes and wires everywhere.

Thanks

John

Halfords were last week doing half price on an Alpine unit that had the interface, a mate bought one.

I know the interfaces alone are 50-odd quid. *edit - the interface is 69.99.
not sure if this is the same deal, but looks good -

I went into Halfords about sorting my iPod/head unit and the guy just looked at me blankly.

I think they must get the same training as PC World.

Going to see if Mobile Fidelity can help, I think.

Halfords are doing a Goodmans Head unit with all Ipod wires included for £79.99 online - dunno how good the unit is but it may be worth a go? :?:

I've always found this site to be good

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/index.php?cPath=737_745

As I said I've got the Dension kit which will work with most set ups, but aint always the cheapest. My dash is slightly different to the S2 lizzy and Exige but you'll get the idea

Hey

Sony do the CDXGT300 with an ipod link which is pretty sound. They are also bringing out a few higher spec versions, or if you want to keep your existing head unit check out the JBL Drive and Play which is pretty sweet.

Let me know if you need any help.

I'd avoid that one. Very basic and you connect via USB which defeats the purpose. Sound output is okay, but its really an entry level product.

MI fitted one of these to my girlfriends Mx5 a couple of weeks ago:

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/produc ... /5697.html
(note that the blue around the volume knob is actually red)

It's a fairly nice unit, controls the iPod with the up/down buttons scrolling the menu and the right left going forward and backwards through the menus so it's fairly easy.

The screen is obviously limited mind with only 2 lines of text, but it works well. I'm not sure you'd want to be scrolling through an iPod as you drive though, Erica made some playlists and usually uses random. 20gb of music means there are a LOT of artists on her ipod, and unfortunetly there is no fast way to get from the start of the list to say the Killers...

That site has a whole section on iPod/compatible stereos but make sure you get one that controls the iPod!

If you are likely to be in or around Dundee anytime soon, drop me a pm before hand and maybe we can meet up so you can have a look see.

We've got a Dension in the Skoda, a dealer-accessory-fit. It's OK, but the head unit has limited display capability so although you can control tracks (having gone through the lottery of key-presses to set the control mode  ) there is no track or playlist info available etc.

It does the job for us for now, and it was free as it happens (part of my wheeling and dealing on the car purchase itself). However I think a head unit upgrade would be needed to get the best out of it.

I'm interested in a new head unit and ipod controller for the elise but only if I can get a head unit with the GALA-type speed-sensitive volume adjustment. Don't see many around?

Also, back on-topic, Pioneer do a wide range of ipod-controller head units last time I checked.
