lucky he wasn't jailed for life
Jools Townsend, of road safety campaigners Brake said Hughes' offence was "shocking" and called the sentence lenient.
"By committing this deadly crime, Hughes undermines the work of traffic police to protect the safety of road users, both within his force and across the country.

Yeah, I remember the first thing I said to the traffic cop after being stopped and cautioned for 89.5 on the A9 was ‘do you round up or round down’ ! When letter came through from court it charged me with doing 89 in a 60 limit. phew...

thot id add my 2c on a relavent thread.
in June got caught by unmarked temporary speed cam doing 62 in a 30 (not in the lotus). was in dunfermline court facing the sherrif this morning to plead guilty.
laywer had set my expectations to expect a 60day ban.
fortunatley this morning he managed to get the speed of offence down from 62 to 57, which meant i was doing less than half the limt... not quite sure how he did this, wi'll ask him in due course.
plead guilty but lawyer went on to mention a few circumstances, ie clean license, 8:20am on a dry clear sunday morning, quiet road with no houses close to road.
got 5points and £300 fine, which tbh is a fair cop guv.
i was bloody daft doing that kind of speed, even tho i dont believe i was posing a direct threat to public as the roads were totally empty + conditions were good. I was relieved as i was previously worried the sherrif would not distinguish between a) number of miles over speed limit with b) actual danger posed to public. ie getting caught doing that speed outside a school at 3:30pm should clearly result in a stiffer penalty.
if i can offer some advice: 1)get a lwayer 2) go along and make an appearance even if pleading guilty and for fcuk sake dress smart.
The numerous gaunt plebs who were up before me for assault, driving without insurance, hit and run (without insurance) etc etc... none of whom wore anything smarter than jeans and t-shirt... ok some were wearing (shell) suits.
g'luck!

If i was doing 0.14mph less, it would have been a £60 fine & 3 points
Whats happens if i appeal ?

It says i need to pay the fine £20 a week, starting off on Tuesday 18th December.
Do you think i should go to the Procurator Fiscals Office in Haddington in person & pay them in full, but with a SWAG bag full of 350 x £1 coins ?
That should piss them off............
