Lawrence Hoy

Post by robin » Tue Dec 11, 2007 12:37 pm

There is no easy way of saying this, so will just go ahead and say it.

Lawrence died on Sunday.

He had been ill for a couple of months battling an aggressive cancer.

The funeral arrangements are:

11.00am on Friday 14 December
Morton Hall Crematorium
Howden Hall Road
Edinburgh
EH16 6TX

and afterwards at
Swanston Golf Club
Swanston Road
Edinburgh
EH10 7DS

Katrina has asked that it be known that all friends are welcome - I am sure that a good number from here will want to attend.

RIP Lawrence
Unfortunately I didnt get to meet you and only knew you from your posts on here over the past year of Lotus ownership but you were such a respected figure in this small lotus community that its such a sad loss.

Robin, if there is anything I can do to help on Friday please let me know. Please pass my offer and sincere Condolences onto Katrina and the Hoy family.

Robin,

Very sad indeed - a real loss. Lawrence was one of the first Scottish_Elisers that I met when I bought my original Elise. Always ready with advice and assistance - and a robust sense of humour :)

Others may also post their recollections - perhaps you could then pass the chain on to Katrina with our condolences.

Terrible news... I met lawrence on the 070707 run & a finer gent you could not meet. I remember having a laugh with him as i turned up late and missed getting a sticker! He kindly gave me his 070707 wine glass that sits proudly in my kitchen.

Couldn't have put it better myself. Hope he knew how much so many of us felt.

Lost for words really...

Lawrence was there on my first ever SE run way back in Jan 03. We met at bottom of Cairn O' Mount and went onwards to Tut's house.

He was there when I did the first 'mods' to my Elise at one of his 'spanners' event.

He gave me the encouragment and support to compete in Sprints and Hillclimbs.

He was a crucial member of our SE team that made this summers French Frolic so enjoyable.

He was always there with sage advice and help.

This is how I'll remember him...oh and that big grin when we were Autotesting!

I met Lawrence in '99 at a Motor Show in Edinburgh. He was thinking about getting rid of his Elise... till I mentioned Scottish Elises. Since he joined he was nothing but accomodating and helpful in both Elise ownership queries and also the plumbing woes I had.

He will be surely missed on this forum.

Condolences to all his family.

Lawrence Hoy...

Low key - would sit on the edge of conversations and controversy, rarely forced his opinion

Affable - first day I met him, hands in pockets in the Knockhill pitlane, grinning cheekily (more to him than met the eye)

Work ethic - grafted away in his business, put in the hours, did canny deals

Racer - affable went out the window yet always a gentleman racer, no malice or tricks

Engineer - never beaten, would make a part, make a tool, found a way around any problem

Nice Guy - welcomed any and all to Spanners & Sponges, the Facility, the "Clubhouse"

Competitive - always looked for the edge (1.4 K, 1.8 K, Hyabusa, power shifter) and the right state of mind too

Enigmatic - you didn't always know where you were with Lawrence (or where he was either)

Helpful - went the extra mile for me many a time

Omniscient - we don't call him Jedi Master Obi Wan Hoy for nothing

You can never die if you live on in the hearts of others. (William McIlvanney).
