Lawrence Hoy
Very sad news.
Lawrence was one of the good, generous and most helpfull guys you'll ever meet. Nothing seemed too much bother for him.
That was Lawrence.
I'm sure he's up there right now having a real good natter with a certain Mr Chapman !
All the best Lawrence.
Kevin.

Struggling to find the words at the moment.
Miss You -
My biggest memory and proudest moment was when Lawrence asked me to take him fro a pax in my elise - then he said those 3 little words..... You were fast...... , for weeks my head was in the clouds. It was an extremely proud moment for me, for Lawrence to think that of me - one of the few female drivers on SE on track - wow what an achievement.
Lawrence - an inspiration to us all, a gentlemen always and a true true friend who will never be forgotton.
Thoughts are with Katrina and family.

Ditto everything that's already been said.
Had a quick look for this video, I remember Lawrence posted it a while back. I've never yet been to any sprints or hillclimbs but watching this amazes me. I believe it's Lawrence driving, if anyone knows I'm wrong then apologies but it's worth a look to see what he loved doing.

p.s. it's over 15MB so might take a bit to download

I have always admired Lawrence for many reasons.
As people have said a true gent. Many a time he has helped me sort out problems and give very good advice.
Nothing ever phased him, not even the time he came up to KH to drive my 340r back to his house. He was taking it back to his as he had offered to splice my loom and fit a plug for the Emerald ECU. It was totally pissing down but he just zipped up his jacket and off he went with a big smile on his face. He and Stu spent many a late night working on my car and he would not take anything from me for doing it.
We were very privileged to have spent time with him and Katrina recently on FF. Many a good memory.
Lawrence has touched many people in his life and I (like other I’m sure) am a better person for meeting him. If only there was more like him.
I heard of Lawrence’s illness from others, since then we had talked a few times on the phone and sent e-mails, a few weeks later I got this text from him.
They say no news is good news, so here’s some news. I’m getting out of hospital tomorrow. I have prostate cancer, a lung cancer and now chronic kidney failure. None appear to be curable and so when my kidneys give in then my heart will stop. You have all been large in my life at various times and I’d like to thank you all so much for all the fun we’ve had together. I’ll be at home till the end and may see a few of you before I go cheers LH
RIP my friend.

"Here for a good time not a long time"
I'll never forget splashing oil onto his garage floor when I was left to do my first oil change "on my own" ! I felt like his apprentice on his first day. And then the time I was taking my car of the ramp on my own for the first time, and dropped it off the plinth and wedged it over the wheel chocks. Same feeling. Can you see a theme developing?! Do you blame him for declining my offer to put his Europa on the ramps for him a couple of weeks back?! He was so bloody direct but yet you always went back for more, cos you knew he knew what he was talking about. And if he didn't...he didn't talk about itNOOPS 160 wrote:Thanks for posting that up these poignant words Scotty , having spent an afternoon one to one time with Lawrence in the spring with his new car ,then Auto-testing and finally 070707.
I think it sums it up his attitude to his long standing and newly accrued friends . His wry wit and attention to detail scolding me at Spanners & Sponges then rewarding me with beers...... he certainly showed me the true spirit of SE.

There may be a few more of these stories so brace yourselves...

Only just spotted this thread. Such very sad news. I had no idea about this. My condolences to Katrina, who I had the pleasure of meeting back in the summer when Lawrence and her drove down to Kippford to meet us. My thoughts are with her and the rest of the family.
In just over a year in SE, I met Lawrence only a few times, but I genuinely felt that he brushed off some of his wisdom every single time. I could listen to him for hours. So knowledgeable and alway so willing to help others.
He helped teach me how to handbrake turn at Autotests and I'll never forget how proud I felt when he told me I'd finally got the hang of it.
Lawrence, thank you so much for all the advice you gave me in such a short time of knowing you . . . I only wish I'd got to know you better.

Truly saddened to hear this.
I first met Lawrence earlier this year, after he had collected a mountain of tools on behalf of the SE and Seven communities, and then again at Oulton Park, where I was greeted like an old friend.
He was genuinely kind hearted and will be sadly missed.
My condolences to Katrina and family, and to all his friends who were fortunate enough to know him better than I.
