just bought a 1995 Jaguar XJ6 Sport, any advice?

Post by David Bryce » Sun Jan 13, 2008 7:12 pm

as a wee project I bought a 1995 Jaguar XJ6 Sport 3.2 earlier today for £2000, it has 99,000 miles on the clock and is in (what I would say) great condition for it's age, the guy I have bought it from is having it MOT'd tomorrow for me before delivering it.

does anyone have any experience of these thing? anything I should look out for?

When I was 15 I set-up a run washing cars. I used to wash one exactly the same as that very reguraly, often two (in the same colour) when her ex-husband and business partner was round to visit. Used to get £2 for washing the jag and her daugter would give me a fiver for washing her aincent astra

Anyway, the only thing I can remember is that it was a two year old car then, and the rear arches had already started to go

If you had got one in dark blue you could have practised your cockney gangster voice and dressed like a darts player but I dont think it would work with the turquoise

I did do a fair amount of research this morning before going to view and spent quite a while checking the car over this afternoon, I'm just after any first hand experience of them.

just checked the AA web site and was surprised to find they offer their Breakdown Repair Cover for cars over 10 years old for just £85 per year, that may come in handy

I have done a lot of milage in years gone by in XJ6s and XJ8s. Love them 8) . Keep it maintained, find a jag specialist, and it will look after you. Downsides; not much rear legroom, small boot, and poor fuel consumption, but very cool.

When you say you have bought it as a project, what's the plan?... strip it out, put a cage in it, do the brakes, suspension and build a track barge? 8)

I've always said, theres 2 types of motoring.
A cheap way & a dear way.

Having a new 730 BMW - Take into consideration - mainly depreciation -
How much has that gone down since it was new ? (on average a car goes half price from new after 3 years) (I know this is debateable)
+ dealer servicing .......
How much will the old smoker Jag depreciate ?(now)
Lucky if its £100 a year now. Suppose it depends on condition.
Service it yourself.

I work with a guy who has a BMW 520i Touring - 1992 J reg.
Paid £1000 for it 2 years ago. Still runs sweet. No major bills.
where as my car has depreciated £2000 in the 18 months.

Don't get me wrong, my BMW 330d sport was £31,500 new in July 03
I bought it in Aug 06 for £12,995 with 88k on it.

Two negatives make a positive but only in Scotland do two positives make a negative - 'Aye right.'

S2 Exige
BMW 435d M Sport - 375bhp..... and stops now (big brakes!😁)
Work Horse - Ford Transit - Full of crap spec....... 170bhp one :-)

I have had a couple of XJ8's and they are generally reliable and comfy cruisers. Parts are cheap and readily available

Even with a £2000 car.....Check all the usual stuff.... or your ownership will be like standing in a shower with your dinner suit on.....ripping up twenty pound notes

*Service History (Dealer and Specialist ) stamps
*All electrics and air- con

*Leather and Auto is a must have........Turquoise not the best colour

Specific known problems are as follows

*Timing chains can rattle on start up but noise should go away

*Auto gearbox should be silky smooth and no shudder/vibration

*Front suspension is very fragile and needs rebushed every 25,000 miles
(look out for any shudder or shimmy on steering ....especially under braking)

(I got so fed up with a brake shudder.......I sold the car after trying all the usual cures)

*Brake Discs also need regular replacement but are relatively cheap

*Sport Alloy wheels corrode from the inside, and in some cases become porous resulting in regular flat tyres

*They rust around the rear arches and behind the rear bumper

Good luck

sheepskin jacket, pipe and slippers have just been bought off eBay

I have taken allot of 'old man' comments since I bought my 7 series, obviously things are just going to get worse now :D

I'm only 32 but I do love big 'old man' cars :D

Looking forward to getting my hands 'dirty' with it as it's been far too long since I have had a car to mess about with.
