S2 Not Cranking

Post by mix » Fri May 09, 2008 3:08 pm

Hi

Appologies for my first post being a 'cry for help' but here goes,

Yesterday, for the first time, (owned since new), my S2 111S K series Elise refused to start. The fuel pump was priming but no starter crank. The RAC jumped the leads at the starter and it ran fine, got me home but still refuses to crank. I have confirmed that there is power to the MFRU and the start relay can be heard engaging. I have also confirmed that when the start relay engages there is continuity across the relay contactor. The battery is in good order.
One strange thing is that I cannot now lock the car, (central locking), as this triggers the alarm, also when unlocking the car after manually locking I get five beeps from a buzzer. The red flashing immobiliser indicator in the rev counter behaves as expected, comes on after about 30 seconds and is cancelled by a press of the large button on the key fob.
I've been right through the technical posts on the forum but cannot find any further info for a case such as this.

Can anyone offer any pearls of wisdom?

Regards Mick

Can't offer any advice on the main issue, but don't the 5 beeps indicate one of the alarm sensors is unarmed (e.g. boot or front access panel) - or does that only happen after the alarm has been triggered, to let you know where the ingress occurred.

Sure it's in the manual somewhere.

Check the fuses in the engine bay underneath the ECU rain cover (bitch to get out, BTW). You need to take out the two allen key head bolts from the boot-side of the boot-to-engine bulkhead (they're not far from where the boot lid stay hinges through the same bulkhead).

Once you've wrestled the rain cover out (you might need to remove the intake trunking from the throttle body to make it a bit easier), you'll see two groups of fuses - the one you should check first is the 20A fuse that is nearest the front kerbside of the ECU panel).

I'm not 100% sure the fuses are in exactly the same location on a 111S but they'll be under the rain cover somewhere - just check them all - beware at least one of them is going to be live even when the ignition is off!

Let us know how you get on ...

Cheers,
Robin

Hi

A huge thanks to Robin :cheers .........Absolutely spot on, the forward of the two 20A fuses was blown. As this fuse also supplies the immobiliser I suppose this is why I was having problems with the locking. I'm still confused as to why the fuel pump was still priming though.

All back to normal now and spare fuses on hand should it happen again.

And I see what you mean about removing the rain cover.
