boot cable broken, can anyone help?

Post by andybman » Mon May 12, 2008 3:45 pm

I took my car for a full service and mot today, however, the phone rings and the guy tells me he has broken the cable for the boot release and cant continue with the service or mot

he also tells me that its not his problem as its a consumable part

looks like most of the cable is intact therefore meaning not much if any left attached to the mechanism?

anybody help me out?

Who has the car?? I'd get the car back and take it to Ali at SLS.

If you dont want to do that, then depending on where the cable has snapped, you might be able to get the boot reopened. Try pulling the drivers side rear wheel arch down, and pulling the cable, thats if its still attached at the boot end.

If its broken at the boot end, then i think you have to cut a hole behind the number plate to get your hand in.

give Ali a call, he's a magician at this and can most likely talk you through it remotely.

where is ali based?

im in dumfries, so a long way away from most places

also, i don need the boot open, i just need it fixed, the mot is up on sat, so i will be screwed for moving it after that, that along with working all bloody week and not going to get a chance to do much

i have contacted the garages head office, as im not happy that they wont take the responsibility of breaking it, so i will wait and hear the outcome of that i guess, but if they are willing to pay for it, then ali will def be the place of choice

btw its a nationwide autocentre, and they are AA affiliated so i will be going down that route aswell if i get no joy as a fully paid up member?!!

Edinburgh.

We're in Ayr, so probably about the same journey time to Edin. Elaine's will still be going to Ali for any work - considering even getting the Shugmobile looked at, but don't want to give him a heart attack ;)

hope you get it sorted Andy.

FAO of anyone driving an S1, you should make sure you tie a bit of string onto the latch and feed it through to the rear right wheel arch and tie it somewhere out of the way of moving parts. Stephen showed me this and about 4 weeks later my cable snapped and i would have been drilling the clam if that bit of string wasnt there! :?

so i take it u have to drill the clam in the number plate recess, is it a small hole?

im a bit concerned...it really looks like its broken off the mechanism and im sure the guy mustv been using force with it...its never been looking like breaking b4...just needed little turns etc to make it pull smoothly

I think its only about a year old as the guy before me had it replaced and told me i wouldnt have to worry about it for a bit?

anyway il keep u all posted on what happens...im pushing for a complete repair from the garage

The cables are sh*t tho...

Geary was talking about making stainless ones but I think he did the electric thing instead.

Bit of string is a good idea :thumbsup

when I put my new one in I took the inner out, greased up the car door end of the outer as much as I could to form a sort of gland and then filled the outer with light oil from the boot (higher end) then fed the inner back in and it seems to be lasting a good while (famous last words).

am still giong to fix bit of string.....

What, so we have to stop the car to get anything out the boot, or to open at track to let the heat out? Sorry, but that's the biggest PITA of the S2 design that I've found since Elaine got it. Gets on my moobs every single time...

Just wait till you lock the key in the boot - that's a whole barrel of fun - more so when it's in the paddock of Knockhill, in the p!ssing rain, at the start of a trackday that you've paid for & it's the sighting laps for the reverse direction day!!!!!

Possible to retrofit the S2 Exige boot release?
