Another worrying noise ...Problem solved with pics.

Post by Jamie84 » Thu May 22, 2008 10:09 pm

Driving along today and noticed a clicking noise comming from front left , in sync with the speed of car.

Automatic guess was nail in tyre , sounded exactly like it .

I'v had a good feel around he tyre and cant feel anything :?

Gonna get the wheel off tomorow and hopefully it is just a nail that can be repaired.

Kinda glad the noise is comming from the front though Id be alot more worried if it was from the engine , Is there any know more serious problems that could cause such a sound ?

Cheers guys .

Did it make a difference when you gently touched the brake pedal?

Sounds like the brake pad clips might be in the wrong way round. very easy to do, and just as easy to sort.

dont think so , not sure what shocker noise would sound like but Id imagine it would be more dull sounding and klunky ?

This is a definite high pitched clicking noise

I'll check tomorow if it goes away when braking ...

Brake pads were changed few months back by Ali , could the clips being wrong way round be somthing that would only be noticed after pad wear?

If they are Pagids its probably just them rattling around, mine do exactly the same, usually after a month or two driving. After that they tend to settle down again.

Once again I'm with the wee man.....both Jinty and mine do this.....until you get them hot.......brake dust will fill the gap eventually and kill the noise!
Feel free to pop over!

Defo dont think its normal , It sounds exactly like a large nail in the tyre smacking rather loudly off the tarmac on each turn, had the car out for a long blast last night and it was still there .

I'll get the wheel off either today or tomorow and get a better look but its defo not somthing I would class as normal . Its loud and could easily be heard by someone on the pavement as I pass (not the usuall rumble/knock/rattles Ive learned to live with.

Anyways I'm, off for a dominos will report back with my findings hopefully soon.

call Ali and ask for his opinion mate :thumbsup

It wont be the brake clips though - might be worth standing on the brakes to see if that lessens or worsens the noise?

SO......I took my wheel off this morning to discover that the small copex carrying 2 cables , I presume for the ABS , Had came loose and must have been smacking of the alloy when turning.......phew.

I did think to be honest that the intervals between each "click" were too often to be somthing on the tyre hitting the tarmac on each turn . The cable had clearly been hitting each spoke on the alloy.

Anyway , When driving this morning my ABS light came on and initially I though I had more problems in store but after removing the wheel you can clearly see that the alloy had cut right through one of the cables in the copex which must have cause the light to come on.

So 2 crimps and some black insulating tape later , problem solved.

Quite satisfying sorting the odd wee problem yourself , Wonder how much Id have been stung for in a local garage for somthing so simple !

Sorry for the big picture , cant seem to rezize it if you scroll over to the right you can see the cable. .
