In the UK we are taxed on fuel then charged VAT on the tax!
http://www.abd.org.uk/taxtable.htm
Just as a point to consider, here in Nigeria petrol is around 70 Naira/litre which equates to around 30p...
Even without any tax at all in the UK we're still being ripped off.
(OK fuel is subsidised in Nigeria but don't let the facts get in the way!).

Check my post earlier in this thread - Autocar article on $200 dollars a barrel and likely £8 per gallon petrol by next year.
I will continue to use the car for commuting, as the alternative takes 3 times as long and costs twice as much and takes away the flexibility which I want in when I travel. So my only hope is that the roads are clearer for me, as the masses have turned to public transport - ah wait the public transport network is sh!t so people can't turn to it . Oh well no change other than we pay more for the pleasure of using our own cars and line the exchequers pockets with increased income because of higher price.
The government would be up the creek if people turned away from cars in a big way because they NEED the taxation - therefore there is no incentive for them to invest big style in public transport as it costs lots to do and robs them of income.

My local MP has invited me to one of his surgeries.... I think he may live to regret sending that invite. I have started a list of points to discuss with him

Where will it all end, eh...
Your train's don't stop at Edinburgh Park - unless you jump on one of the slow Stirling trains.

And the point that staying at home on the dole is more profitable then actually traveling to your job moves steadily upwards. Costs myself and helen about £200 a month to get to work and that is car sharing half the time as our offices are quite close. We earn a decent wage if we earned less then it would not be economical to work.

Journey time Linlithgow to Edin Park is around 14 mins IIRC. To Haymarket is around 18-20. No tangible slowness on the Stirling trains from our personal point of view, therefore - although I would not fancy commuting Dunblane to Edinburgh regularly on one of them!
There is pressure on Scotrail to have Glasgow services calling at Edin Park but I reckon that is some way off yet.
Unfortunately the unreliability of Scotrail services means Lisa prefers the car as it gives her more chance of making it home from work before they lock the kids into the nursery overnight

I don't work for ScotRail - I don't travel by train either.
I've met the muppets they use to work on the tracks

I didn't say that you did!
I too know of the muppets they get to work on the tracks, and I always have a nagging doubt that they are thinking more about what bolts they'll be undoing on their Caterhams when tbey get home than the job in hand

I thought the little playful dig about not getting home in time for the kids refered to me
When I'm at work I am fully focused (on the next track day)

Oh no, not at all. Although the UK rail industry is a bit on the confusing side these days

I remember when all I could put in my car was £5
It was an old 3 door metro with the low fuel filler and if you put any more in it all run out when you went round a corner
