Rover 75 turbo engine
Rover 75 turbo engine
My mate has got one of these engines thats came out of a accident damaged car. He said I can have it for £100. Before anyone gets the wrong idea, I don't want to turbo my elise. I just want a decent cylinder head (after my £30 vvc head turned out to be shafted) to put some cams into and get ported so I can just do a head swap on my car.
Does anyone know if the head and block are the same as a normal non turbo 1.8 k-series? or if they are at least compatible?

Re: Rover 75 turbo engine
Pretty sure that's a T series engine, totally different. Not 100% though.
Best bet is to look for a 1.4 metro head from flea bay, just learn from DVA's website to spot the difference between a high and low port head. I got one for £30 IIRC including postage.

Re: Rover 75 turbo engine
I would imagine the heads will be the same, and alas the turbo won't fit the bulkhead gets in the way (I did think about it
)
Don't think they fitted the T series to the 75 if memory serves me right it is a 1.8 low pressure turbo

Re: Rover 75 turbo engine
I'm pretty sure they were k-series engines with a low pressure turbo bolted onto them.

Re: Rover 75 turbo engine
What is actually wrong with the VVC head, as a matter of interest?
I think the head will work fine; it was a light pressure turbo engine, so the engine remained more or less untouched with just a small drop in compression ratio; bore and stroke were left untouched. Given that they used a turbo they wouldn't have needed to mess about with changing valves or cams ... go for it!
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Rover 75 turbo engine
Lack of lube I think or badly overheated, both maybe? Basicaly the cam bearings on the head are badly worn. I have been told it can be fixed by skiming either the bit that holds the cams to the head or the top of the head itself, then doing a bit of align boring...sounded expensive anyway so I thought I'd just start with a good head.robin wrote:What is actually wrong with the VVC head, as a matter of interest?

Re: Rover 75 turbo engine
Would I be able to use the valves from the VVC head on a standard head? I'm sure I read that it could be done but it would need new inserts. Would it be worth doing? or would it be cheaper to just get another VVC head?

Re: Rover 75 turbo engine
There's a lot more differences to the VVC head than just the valves - even if you do get new inserts put in the ports are straighter and better on the VVC head. It's essentially the VHPD (which isn't hand machined or anything) Rumour has it that it's the design that was supposed to be used for the 1.8K all along, before the bean counters got in the way and the standard 1.4 head ended up getting used.

Re: Rover 75 turbo engine
I believe the 1.8T engine has slightly shorter rods to lower the compression, other than that i think the head will be a standard 1.8K.
Can i ask what was all coming with the engine? I wouldn't mind having the bottom end and exhaust manifold/ turbo to mess about with!
If you buy the engine for the head, ill buy the bottom end off you.
I think the VVC has much bigger ports overall, aswell as bigger valves. You could remove the valves and have the head ported, then rebuild it with VVC valves. You know you have a good head that way!

P.A.T. on Norlog has a T series in his S1 Elise, very very neat (Now he has got to it and fixed the PO bodges)
It goes like (mildly turbo lagged) sh!t off a teflon shovel! Fair bit heavier though.
But he came from the 200SX world so he's used to that
