Get rid of the Pipercross, they really are sh*t! It will be letting in dirt and stopping the throttle quadrant from fully returning. To check, next time it does it, don't blip the throttle and press on the clutch and put the car into neutral as it rolls to a stop. Get out, open up the boot and use your hand to push the throttle quadrant to its rest position. If this causes the revs to drop then you need to clean out the throttle body. You are best removing it to do this and also drop the IACV out the bottom at the same time to clean it properly. While you're at it, clean your MAF sensor as it will probably also be covered in crud.

And again, ditch the Pipercross. I'm talking from experience here, my throttle body is possibly past being repairable now as I think I've (well, the sh*t Pipercross) damaged the IACV. I really hope not as I think they are about £900 for a new one

Oh, and one more time - get rid of the bloody PIPERCROSS!!!

This link (on a Celica but the same, I think - someone please correct me if I'm wrong) shows how to remove and clean the throttle body properly:

With any Yota, I'd not take the risk and leave it standard... Too much to go wrong with the intake side and I don't fancy funding a new Yota motor. Noise can be handled admirably with exhaust alone and we know fine well that power isn't really affected so far as you'd notice.

Cant remember, was one posted on Exiges.com that appeared to give a 'genuine' gain without MIL problems, downside is that it was over £600 or thereabouts. Will have a swatch to see if I can find it.

What, 4bhp? I honestly think they're a waste of time...

IIRC Dave got his car form MMC with the PiperX so no std airbox to put back in.

Okay so had a quick looky last night. The foam piperx is bone dry, run finger across it and you just get fine silt on your finger not a drop of oil.

Pub was calling and I forgot my socket set so did not get it off to check on the mechanism of the TB.

Questions:
1. Can he just throw a K&N on the end of the fancy dancy piperx carbon tube ?
2. What has the risk been to the engine if it has been sucking in all this grit etc. How many mile Dave ? 10k ?
3. It came from MMC like this and I think they addressed a MIL light issue as a result. Still under warrenty, what to claim for though ?

If you clean and oil the piperX it will filter properly. I have one in my bay (as it came with my fancy airbox) No need to buy anything else, just take proper care of the bit he has. Clean and re-oil regularly (like every 5k miles) or after every long trip away. You'd need to do the same with a K&N anyway and I believe FWIW the PiperX will flow more. PiperX filter cleaner and recharge kits available in Halfrauds - I used K&N oil on mine for a while with no ill effects.

Risk? Depends how hard it's been used, how gritty the environment is (I'd not give an engine on aberdeen back roads 2K in summer without a decent filter, for instance)

Not sure how MMC warranty will cover this, as fitted by them. They could argue the oil has simply evaporated and it's a maintenance issue - no way to prove if it's been oiled or not, this far down the line... Should be maintained at service though.

Cheers Shuggybear, lets go back to the original question, sticky accel. My concern is that on taking off the piper we are going to find a gummed up TB and gawd knows what went past it.

99% of his miles have been M8 so not all bad.

Guess I just have my K-series hat on and assume that all engines grenade and are consumables.

If it's gummed up, it should clean up fine, unless it's shagged the spindle bearing surface. Can't imagine it would have in a few thousand miles.

I think worst case, it might need a new MAF sensor. Still pretty new to this yota stuff meself...
