Flexi blowing
Typical coming up to Scotland this weekend to Campbells and my Flexi section has started to blow
, i would like to know how are these sections joined together, could it split completely? (is it the braiding) and what problems could be caused by still bringing the car up if any, it will be next week before any replacement can be sourced.

Re: Flexi blowing
It's a braided outside a concertina tube then a braided hose inside that, if you can weld/get someone to weld it you can chop the section out and get a repair piece from partco, as for damage I hope not I drove mine back from silverstone with it in 2 bits
This is a good opertunity to go stainless 4-2-1

Re: Flexi blowing
hmm I just went in and had a look at the book it's standard pieces you weld in just try and get one the correct length it may help if you go have a look at the existing one first then go and get whatever is closest.

Ian,
just typical eh, I guess the car knows it's on the market!
if you source the pipe section (maybe the full unit, rather than just the flexi-joint piece) somewhere in Linlithgow - Livingston - Edinburgh area, we may be able to go in and sort it out on Saturday morning at a friendly exhaust place with you monitoring their work, save you lugging the part all the way up with you (if time is tight for you)
I could even collect tomorrow on your behalf if you let me know pronto
alternatively if you are confident on changing the pipe yourself (I think the studs at the manifold end could be feckers?) then I may be able to borrow Robin's ramps for us to do this at my house
keep me posted!

[wish I'd known tonight...had to abort my oil change when I realised I couldn't easily get the rear of the Elise onto axle stands!...I may be in touch next week!]

Re: Flexi blowing
I would just get a SS flexi or as Nizzy says a 4-2-1
Manifold/flexi bolts are a royal pain to get undone.

Re: Flexi blowing
The studs will be a nightmare, use a hex socket and not a multi hex socket If possible, plenty of penetrating fluid and a gas burner for when you get really annoyed. I would say it was easier for me as I didn't plan on keeping anything But I used a set of vice grips to remove the nuts at the manifold end but that entails removing the manifold to let it drop down enough for access (also mean new gasket and possibly some manifold to head studs) oh and wear safety glasses rust in the eye is un pleasent.
If you need a hand give us a bell (depending on your location it may only be moral support)

Re: Flexi blowing
I think maybe, just maybe, he's cracked it...seemed to have more bother getting the new section to seal properly than getting the old bolts undone...but we'll know in about 2-3 hrs when hopefully he rocks up here
