quick question regarding tyre tread....

Post by Jamie84 » Fri Aug 22, 2008 6:45 pm

Iv never actually been sure what the legal limit is on tread , just read that its 1.6mm? cambell ?

anyway my rears are not far off the tyre wear indicator , although dont really look anywhere near 1.6mm...so what exactly does the indicator indicate ? are the tyres illegal when the tread is level with indicator ? I would have thought this was the case but as I said doesnt really look 1.6mm...

hoping I can get the rest of the summer? out of them , then replace with a winter tyre maybe.

reckon the law is something like 1.6mm across 3/4 of the tyres breadth and all the way around.

I supposed the depth indicators are exactly that. Maybe the tyre manufacturers try to get you to buy tyres before you need them (legally) or their guides are based on the particular tyre? I'd imagine they aren't necessarily UK law either as I suppose they sell the tyres in different countries too...

I'm just about to stick a full set of Yokohama S and C Drives up for sale for £60...

Basically brand new and retail over £100 per tyre if you want them?

Got a full set of T1-R's to fit.

Legal minimum is 1.6mm of tread across 3/4 of the width of the tyre.

wear indicators are generally at 2mm so you have time to change the tyre before being illegal.

Any doubts on the legality of your tyres swing past a kiwk fit or similar and they will measure them for you - and then try and sell you a set at which point you tell them that the compound is dealer supply only but thanks for the check :D

No probs :thumbsup

I'm away to London on Tuesday for a bit but planning on getting Ali to swap them next weekend.

I'll prob leave them at his and then you can get them there? He has a guy that fits them for £15 a corner IIRC.

Maybe be able to sell your 48's as track tyres and get your money back :thumbsup Sure someone would spend £60 on even 4 bald ones just to blast them round a track!
