Depends what's happened to the engine ... if you've pushed a rod through the liner & block I would be inclined to replace the bottom end; if you've just done a big end bearing or pistons are worn out I would rebuild.

If it was an elise i would say honda

But a 340R is an increasingly rare car and i would be tempted to stick with a K to keep it as close to standard as possible as a classic

Head gasket is no big deal - remove head, check liners are at acceptable stand proud, skim head, new head gasket, new head bolts, job done.

Is it really necessary to skim the head? Surely you are just using up head life and risking porosity? :?

Hardness test, pressure test, dye penetrant and inspect not better?

I had several K heads skimmed when my old engine went pop - 3 or 4 of them were like cutting through an Aero bar....

Not a Wispa? That said do the VHPDs have the same problem?

A skim to return the head to true makes sense if it's been overheated or mauled by failed fire rings, etc.

If on removal the head is flat, fair enough, slap it back on without a skim ...

Rebuild to 2.0L is substantially more complicated than 1.8/1.9. 20,000 miles - at 2.0L you would be lucky to last 5,000 ;-) Seriously, I don't know the answer - the 1.9 conversions are essentially the same as the 1.8 VHPD in construction but with bigger liners and a machined block to accept them; the Scholar variant is most popular, but has certainly had some issues for some people whilst others have been happy with the results - I cannot say that I know enough about what they do to really know whether it's a good idea or not! For 2.0L you're looking at PTP (or perhaps QED sell the bits?), and mucho $$$. My advice, leave it as a 1.8.

There was a guy running a 340R in last year's LOT series (2007) ... he was in class B - David Harvey maybe? ... anyway he had the alternator drive off the end of the camshaft and I'm sure he would let you know where he got the bits, etc.
