Alarm problem fixed by AA :top tip

My car let me down today for the first time in 3 years , I was locked out and the alarm would not open the car . Despite my best efforts and alarm sounding for ages I was stuck and had to call the AA.

After much messing about breaking in the AA man looked on his PC and got the reset procedure for the alarm , something I was not aware of and worth writing down . Press the two fob buttons until the lights stop flashing then press the big button .

The reason I post is I have always had to go very close to the car to get it to open , changed batterys to no avail . I can now open it from 50 feet away ( probably more but I could not go further).

I am going to stick it in the car with the alarm code . I got slagged to death by my mates.

found this out the hard way also , changed the battery on the fob when the car was out on the street. Couldnt get back in the car.

Called MMC and someone talked me through the procedure.

Pretty easy to remember after a while !

Mine is like this too but I always just assumed that must be the norm. I will give the reset thing a bash.

Does the alarm have to be actually triggered or can I just walk over to the car and do it at any time?

I think you can do it at any time . Did it today with the alarm armed and car locked .

I cannot answer that question just in case I tempt fate . Its in need of some tlc , lots I want to do . Road tax runs out this month so its probably going in the garage early.

Be careful - this doesn't apply to all Elise/Exige alarms - your owners manual should also have a installation certificate that tells you what model of alarm you have fitted - probably worth posting that up so we know which one this relates to?

BTW, your owner's manual should have all the infomation about alarm reset procedures, etc., in it too ...

I have the Cobra 8186 fitted .

Doh! Robin you are right the reset is under transmitter re-synchronisation

Smasshin tip, think i'll give it a whirl as my transmitter is weak too.
I got Cobra system,think i'll store the ifo in my phone and try it tomorrow

I have a cobra system fitted to my current car , it has 4 buttons on it and using a similar proceedure I can resync the system/remote. I guess it is a standard Cobra function.

I hold both middle buttons down for 15 seconds (till the led stops flashing and stays on solid) then release, then click 1 of the middle button. Resynced and doors unlock.

May help someone in an emergency.

Might give this a try too, but will check manual first. I have to go pretty close and also just assumed that was the norm as the elise was also like that. The new system in new models like Heather's Elise S is great. Not only is the alarm button finally built into the key (which even has a lotus logo on it! ), but it works from quite far away too, like most normal alarms on other cars.

My boggo S1 alarm doesn't seem to notice when I change the battery in the fob, it just works.
