The rover manual recommends that you rotate the crank as little as possible till the oil rail is in place and the head bolts are torqued.

Coming along nicely Steve.
I would have left the molycote as per the first pic though; it shouldn't need buffed off.

I think the main concern is lifting the liners if the head is off - in this case the liners are still in Stevie's sock drawer or similar so not a big problem ... or am I missing something!Mikie711 wrote:The rover manual recommends that you rotate the crank as little as possible till the oil rail is in place and the head bolts are torqued.

Until the head is bolted on it's a lot harder to turn the crank. So as well as the danger of unseating the liners the crank and ladder assembly isn't sitting true until the oil rail, bearing ladder and block are pulled together with the head bolts. Noticed the warning in the manual but it doesn't say why exactly.
Anyway, nice job Steve. Be good to see/hear it up and running. What sealant you using for the liners?.

Sock drawer Robin?? Come on, give me some credit please.... They're tucked up nice and warm with my slippers
And it will definitely fire up.... one way or another
Mike, my concern with the crank started a while back when torquing a cam ladder down - when at torque (and measured twice) the cams were locked solid & i had to back off the bolts a bit to get it to rotate freely. Just being cautious I guess. I dont know too much about sealants, so I'm sticking with the GGC 102 Hylomar stuff & found some in partco which shuts in 3 hours... so best be off there soon
Rebuild run sounds like a plan Noops, It's been nearly 5 months driving past my sick car every day
Cant wait to get it up and running!
Mrs Weegie wants to look at dogs today too, so gonna have my hands full later!!

Re: Back from the dead? Rebuilding a K blog
Right, got a few more things done now....

To fit the pistons into the liners, the rings need compressed to fit into the bore. The piston's installed into the ring compressor which is then tightened up to the size of the piston. A little bit of piston is left (you can just see it on the left) to help engage it with the liner.

Once it's lined up, push it in firmly watching out for rings escaping free from between the liner and ring compressor.

And it should look like this when finished

Then return all 4 to the company of slippers

The above photo shows the liners and pistons test fitted into the block. When Stu machined the block for the liners, he made reference marks to indicate their correct orientation. Once the marks on the block line up with the marks on the liner, the piston is rotated to its correct orientation to engage the big end bearings on the crank. I'm doing this now, as i dont want to be messing about with this when i've got the sealant on the liners... Messing this bit up is NOT an option!
More to follow tonight

Any pictures of the head's combustion chambers/valves before assembly? Pictures of shiny go faster bits are always popular
