Which Radiator??

Post by neil » Mon Dec 22, 2008 5:31 pm

Just been told by Steve Walker that my radiators leaking. Seeing as the clams off anyway I'm probably best getting a new one installed. Should I just go with the standard Lotus one or one of the upgraded ones from Eliseparts?

Cheers

I had a proalloy high capacity one fitted a few months back that I bought direct from here - http://www.proalloy.co.uk/cgi-bin/sitew ... d=proalloy

They also make the cheaper eliseparts version but dont sell that direct to the public (or at least didnt when I bought mine).

I bought teh high capacity one on the premise that bigger and more expensive was better  .

It also looks shiny, but you cant see this when its fitted. If you fit a new Lotus one with the plastic bits it will only fail again maybe a couple of years down the line.

Proalloy it is then. Anything else worth getting done while the clam's off?

Check the cooling fan, not just for function but for sound - if it's starting to sound a bit "rough" on start up then now's the time to replace.

Depending on the age of the car it might be an idea just to swap it out for a new one anyway - the cost of the fan itself is buttons compared to the labour removing and replacing the front clam.

I'm a bit far away from the car to check it myself - its an '04 so maybe due. Would you recommend the standard Lotus one or an "upgraded" Eliseparts one?

I've never had a fan go, but both my elises have done there rads. If it were me i'd get an upgraded rad and leave it at that.

I think I heard...maybe on another thread, search for Fd posts...that actually unless you are doing some other appropriate mods at the same time, sticking with a standard rad is the correct thing to do.

A forum search project for you there, then, Neil ;-)

I assume he meant standard SIZED rad, not standard rad. theres no real need for a bigger rad, just one that wont break every couple of years.

Yeah - but on both your cars the fan would get a bit of a work out. It's when it sits doing nothing for the best part of the year that it starts to go. When I had the elise on track most weeks it wasn't a problem, now that it's "retired" it's very noisey and is needing replacing.
